On paper, the plan might have seemed bulletproof. Stanislav Bakanov would videotape himself driving his BMW at ridiculous speeds and post it on YouTube, thereby earning the admiration of juiced-up meatheads nationwide. Either he'd drive fast and get away scot-free, or he'd get pulled over, in which case the videotaped conversation with police would make him an even bigger Internet sensation. Unfortunately, Bakanov forgot that driving 140 mph would simply get him thrown in jail--and the video footage? That's what prosecutors call "exhibit A." Reuters reports that Bakanov was arrested on Saturday after an officer clocked his black 2005 BMW going at near light speed up I-5 in northern Oregon. When the officer approached Bakanov's car, he supposedly saw that Bakanov was videotaping him from the front seat. He asked why and the driver proceeded to tell him that he was trying to make a YouTube video. The officer wasn't too jazzed about making an unpaid cameo in such a low-budget film, and promptly arrested Mr. Bakanov--but not before he asked what else was on the video and got to see leadfoot's speedometer top out at 140 mph--way higher than the 118 mph he'd clocked him at. So the video camera was confiscated and used as evidence that's already led to his car being impounded and him being fined $1,100, and will likely lead to a driver's-license suspension as well.
WOW......I5 in northern OR is not where I would try to go fast ! Lots better places to try that, or at least I have been told there are......
Every car I have driven in the past 15 years has had an optimistic speedometer. I wonder if he will get any credit for speed expansion?
