So, I'm not getting a new car anytime soon but it doesn't prevent me from getting excited at the 2013 Mustang GT and the fact that Jay Mays and the rest of Ford marketing FINALLY figured it out. You can get a base model GT with a manual starting at 30,300. That get's you 420hp and 390 ft-lbs in a 3,602 lb car. Check two boxes (not available before nor were parts of these unless you bought the "premium" model) and you get: -Track Package ($2,495): 3.73 Rear Gears/Torsen Diff/Boss 302 Oil Cooler/Boss 302 Radiator/Brembo 14in BBK/Summer Tires : -Recaro Race Seats ($1,595) After destination costs total: $35,185 MSRP. That is all I have ever wanted. The no bells and whistles, got all of the "go fast" parts weekend track-toy. That's a whole lot of good times for that kind of money. It makes me happy to know that there is a possibility that I could have that sort of a, from-the-factory, track-day car. So awesome. :drool Okay, I feel better now. Back to your regularly scheduled MINI Motoring.
I've been an import fanatic since I was into cars. But I'll admit, the new Mustang is really awesome. I really like the improvements that Ford has made over the past decade or so in the quality of their cars. The GT is an exceptional value for a RWD sports car, and the Boss302 is insane. I'd buy one!
Now they just need to add a Watts-link rear as an option (or standard :ihih: ) and you have a perfect track-day toy.
Definitely agree. I talked to a guy who bought a second set of wheels with NT-01's and a set of PFC-01 brake pads, slapped them on his Boss 302 500 miles from the showroom, and hit the track. That sounds like fun.
The Boss 302 is a monster for sure. I'd love to have one but at the same time I'd be worried that I was gonna "hurt" a nice car. Dumb, I know. I'd be much happier beating up on a plain GT with all they goodies. Not as fast or as nimble as a Boss but good enough to keep my track-day wannabe racer satisfied.
I think it is the Boss that has a unique way to unleash track performance, you get two keys with the car one is black and the other red, put in the black key for daily driving duties, you put in the red key and it unlocks more HP and different suspension settings along with other things.
Yep I could easily be a blue oval guy at the track with a Boss 302!!! ...and consider you can reach that $35grand mark fairly easily with a new Mini Coupe.. :what:
Actually it does nothing to the suspension. They are adjustable shocks but they are manual. The red key runs a COMPLETELY different tune. It was described as: Anything that doesn't help the car go faster is turned off or tuned differently. Very Cool. It's pretty scary when you think about it. :eek6: I looked at an M3 with a competition package at it was $60k has less horsepower and torque and a 100 lbs more curb weight. I want to see another comparo test of the M3 versus the 2013 GT with a track package. Admittedly the the GT with the track goodies isn't as powerful or as competent as a Boss 302 but for 35k it's hard to beat track toy for the $$$. Though I will point out the 2013 Boss 302 Laguna Seca sticker price is $10k LESS than the M3 with the competition package. Assuming there is no dealer mark-up... Also I will note the M3 get's hit with a Gas Guzzler tax and the Mustang GT or the Boss 302 do not.
I don't know about anybody else, but Ford in my opinion has really been on the mark the last 2 years in just about everything styling, performance and fuel economy.
Awesome to hear that they've finally made all the performance options separate from the Premium package. Also, unlike MINI, Fords are typically available well under sticker, so one might be able to procure such a Mustang GT for in the ballpark of a pretty lightly-optioned JCW, for instance. It's a smoking deal, that's for sure. I toyed with the idea of a BOSS 302, but it's just more than I want to spend on ANY car, and the wife's not likely to go for adding a 3rd Mustang to the stable. lol
This has been on Carmax for three weeks now. I can't figure out why it isn't gone yet. Hell, it even comes with the red track-key! 2012 Boss 302 - Orange
Just read a review of the 'stang by some Indy car driver. Can't remember the name. I believe by 3rd/4th sentence he took a shot at all the cheap, ill fitting, plastic parts on the inside. While overall his review was positive: bang for the buck, better than before, etc., there was a clear "message between the lines" on the limits of the live rear axle. That being said, if I had spare bags of money I would go for the Boss 302 with Laguna Seca package. Of course I'd also go for the Camaro LZ1 if I had another bag of cash.
Maybe I don't get it, but $42 large for a used car and it has cloth seats? I wouldn't look past that.
For all the whining I hear about it in magazine reviews having a live rear axle it still poops in M3 territory before you get to BOSS models. Not bad performance for a car almost half the price. Guess you are going to lose out on some interior but the 2010+ models have some seriously upped interiors. Not Bentley level mind you but good quality for a pony car. The Camaro, Corvette, and Mustang suffer from "old" tech in one way or another. I kind-of like it that way. Jerry, you just said you'd buy a LS Boss 302. That is a Boss. Not an LS model but a Boss none-the-less. It is a track-car that can be driven on a street. It is rare. The "cloth" seats are Recaros. It is reasonably priced ("used" or not) for what it is. No, it really wasn't targeted at the guy who is looking to get a 997 Turbo. So, you not being happy with it makes sense to me. :goaljnky BTW, you owe me a ride at Buttonwillow when you finally get the Turbo. :fingerscrossed:
I'm just saying at that price range they could have covered those seats in something more appropriate. I am not asking for "genuine Corinthian leather", but they could have; no, should have done better. You can have the ride as soon as the wife allows me to track it. There is a long, ongoing discussion on that topic. :cornut:
I like the new commercial, esp. at the end. I see the little girl and I think "NO, not pink!" and then... [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8SaMsUCv4A]Mustang ad (2013) - YouTube[/ame]
