Today we lost Dizzy, our 9.5 year old greyhound. He was a retired racer. We adopted him from a greyhound rescue group 7 years ago. Last Thanksgiving, he started limping and it was diagnosed as bone cancer. He had an amputation just before Christmas, followed by chemotherapy. BTW, my wife hand-knit that sweater for him several years ago. He adapted to being a tripod very well. His walking actually sped up! He was lively and happy for the next 6 months after the operation. We live by a street of shops and restaurants, and he loved hopping up and down the street to meet people and dogs. We knew that the statistics were grim, but we were hopeful about his cancer survival prospects. X-rays revealed a tumor in his chest, and fluid was accumulating in his lungs. The vet drained the fluid, which made him more comfortable but his condition deteriorated with astonishing speed. Within a few weeks his breathing became difficult and he stopped eating. It was heartbreaking to see him turn his head away from any food. We offered everything. He rapidly lost weight and became weak. Dizzy on his final day. We loved him and will miss him.

Sorry for your loss, but thanks to people like you, these magnificent animals have loving homes! We do rescue here in the Central Valley, small dogs though. ACT: Animal Compassion Team. Nothing more heart breaking seeing unwanted animals :frown2:
I'm sorry for your loss, as pets ARE part of families. Yes, you rescued Dizzy, but we can all see from the pics that he rescued you and your family, as well. My sincere condolences...now, gather yourself and rescue another doggy for a chance for a great home!
Great tribute to this well-loved member of your family. Thanks for sharing. Two rescue GSD's at our place, well-loved too!
Sorry for your loss, you did everything you could possibly do, what a great love story. You will have him in your hearts and memories, always hard to let our cherished friends go, but they are not in pain anymore. There is a dog heaven and a rainbow bridge, be happy that Dizzy is watching over you from afar. Don
RIP Dizzy. I'm sure that he was grateful for the life you provided for him and he's gone to a better place. My condolences.
Thanks everybody for your words and support. The last few weeks were very stressful as Dizzy fell into his rapid decline. I am at peace knowing that we loved and cared well for him.
