I need to replace a burnt out running light and for the life of me I can not do it.

This is the one that is in the same assembly as the turn signal. The turn signal holder socket comes out easily (too easily....in fact it's cracked and is temporarily duct taped....is this socket available on it's own?).

From what I've read, the running light comes out the same way, just twist the holder socket thing and remove, but holy crap, this just is not happening.

Am I doing this correctly? Any hints or tricks? Does the bumper need to come off?

    EDIT: this is for a 2005 S.

Try some silicone spray, it'll turn easier. Usually there's some grit that gets stuck in the o-ring and makes it difficult to turn. Once you do it the first time and clean it, it'll be much easier. But get a little silicone in there to ease the friction, it's safe for plastic and rubber.

i tried some WD-40 already, I guess i'll keep swearing at it.

after removing the turn signal socket holder thing, do you remove the entire black housing by rotating or do you just try and remove the part that the running light wire is clipped into?

Twist the entire black part. When I did it the first time, one of them was tight but not too bad, but the other side was so stuck that I had to use pliers to get enough grip to twist it. Once you get it off the first time, it loosens up and won't be difficult the next time.

I can't do it. I gave up. The car wins. I unplugged the running light on the other side so it's at least even for now.

Wish I could help you, I have a 2009. But I'll say this, when I replaced my two fog light bulbs, I had a heck of a time getting the plug to rotate so I could pull the fixture out.

If you're going to the Dragon, bring your good bulbs (replace both....you know the other side will go out soon), I'm sure there will be plenty of help for you.

If not the Dragon.... local MINI club members??? And then there is always the dealer.

I'll bet what may have happened in your case.... The rubber seals have gotten warm and have stuck themselves to the two parts that need to rotate to come apart. And without the lubrication to let them slide, you aren't breaking the seal.
