It was all hands on deck at the height of the flood waters in Deerhurst, Gloucestershire, as a family rushed to save a rare 1964 Mini Cooper S in the process of being returned to its former glory.

The shell of the car was six months into a restoration project by Mini enthusiast Brendan Crowley, who lives in the village.

But when waters began to rise, Mr Crowley called in the family to help.

Sons James and Daniel joined his brother Gerry and nephew Simon to load the shell of the 1964 Mini 1071 Cooper S on to a boat to take it to dry land where it could be collected and taken to Gloucester for welding.

Mr Crowley is now hoping to get the car restored before May in time for the 50th anniversary of the Monte Carlo rally.

He said: "It will be in show condition once it is complete so it will be worth in excess of £30,000. We are used to floods living here, but the boat certainly came in handy."

James said: "The water was at least three foot deep, but we knew where the road was by looking at the hedge.

"We had to watch out for a hidden dyke that we knew wasn't too far away, but it was quite safe."
