Enthusiasts spoke, and Volkswagen listened. VW announced Thursday that the diminutive and powerful Golf R is coming to the United States in 2012.

VW said the Golf R will have a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with a significant increase in horsepower over the 200-hp GTI.

The car will also get Haldex 4Motion all-wheel drive, a sport-tuned electronic stability program, larger brake rotors and a fortified suspension for athletic driving.

The Golf R will come in two- or four-door configurations and will have a manual transmission.

Inside are unique steering wheel and trim plus an R-model shift knob and doorsills.

The exterior is marked by R front and rear fascia, 18-inch alloy wheels, an R body kit, badging and a center dual exhaust.

Boo on the 4 door. I have an 04 r and I still think it is the best one yet. It also has actual racing seats unlike the 08

Is that the year that had the special "variable acoustic" muffler?

Agree on the Boo @ the 4-Door. My MkV was a 2-door

As far as the MkIV R32, it was cool except for being a MkIV... :ihih: Just pullin' yer chain. I know there was a bunch of MkV vs. MkIV animosity which I never understood. I liked the MkIV Jetta I had. (Yes, I owned a "chick" car :blush2:)

The Golf R (possibly called the R20?) is an exciting prospect.

Is this the VW concept car at the 2007 SEMA show as a GTI? If I remember correctly it was touted then as 0 to 60 in 4.2 seconds

could be interesting, if priced below $30k. Above, it gets into stiff competition

The 07 sema car was the w12 I believe.

Yes the year I had came with a variable exhaust override.

Dont worry I'm a mk3 guy anyway. But I do have a soft spot for the mkiv jetta.

This car coming out would be the r20 for the 2.0 liter motor
