Often went out to the old home place with my g-pa many years ago to see all the aunts, uncles and cousins. They always had a tribe of guineas. No way could a kid sneak up on anything out there. Old Uncle John kept an eye on the place from the back of a Morgan and still did some chores with a team of Belgian/Morgan cross or for single harness work, a mule. Vaguely remember walking along with him while the mule pulled a lister setting corn seed while I tried to beat the birds to the fish worms.

Wishful thinking? It would go well with a plate of guinea fricassee.

    How sweet.
    16 babies!
Mama looks a little stressed, at least she doesn't have to keep them warm.

Love chickens, ask Jim about his chickens project

I spent many a winter in Aiken with racehorses. Winter training grounds for many a good one.

Ridgeway, SC which is about 20 miles north of Columbia, SC.

Oh we are not looking at keeping all those chicks. We started with 6, then momma hatched 16. We had 6 grown guineas but down to 5 now. We have red tail hawk hanging around, I think he got the one we are missing!

    SC is a pretty state.

We have a pair of hawks, I think red shoulder, nesting nearby.
I had a bunch of young squirrels at my bird feeder, stealing sunflower seeds.
I started hand feeding them peanuts and they got real sleek.
Only, there aren't nearly as many as there used to be.
Those hawks can really scream, and everyone goes to ground fast when they do.

I hope your hawk doesn't get your babies!

    Hawks are cool though.
Raptors are fascinating, but I'd just as soon they stuck to eating snakes.
I know, they help to keep the varmits under control.
