    Welcome to M/A.

Check all battery & cable connections. Start with the easy stuff first. How old is the battery?

+1 on the battery. MINI's don't like old batteries and throw all kinds of electrical gremlins when they start to go bad. Also check the jump start stud in the little black box on the left side of the firewall under the bonnet. These have been known to come loose and/or corrode which causes problems similar to what you explained.
