I am new to this forum but I am impressed what I have seen so far! I bought my 2006 Mini Cooper S convertible about a year ago. It only had 50k miles on it and I think we got a really good deal on it. I have wanted one for several years and we were finally in a position to go for it last year. Other than tires, I hadn't had to do much maintenance wise until just before Christmas. I knew I needed brakes and I put it off as long as I could but I finally had them done - not cheap!! Then something really strange happened... As I pulled out of the parking lot and attempted to enter a highway, I realized I had NO POWER!! I only had one gear and could only go about 30 mph. I exited quickly and returned to the shop. They could not figure out what happened so they had it shipped to the local Mini dealer. They scanned it and reportedly got no specific error codes, but they say that gears 1-3 work fine and 4-6 are gone. They say I need a whole new transmission, but I am not convinced. I had absolutely no transmission issues when I took her in so I am convinced they did something during or after the brake work. I posted a separate thread on this as well, but I figure the more people who see this story, the more likely I am to get some advice. Any help is appreciated!

Happy driving! Hopefully we will be up and running again soon too!

Welcome aboard the fun Mini site

My new (used) Mini came from Texas
Sorry to here about your trany. I'd do a little background check on the company that did the brakes to see if any one else has had issues with them.

Sounds really strange to me? I'm assuming its a manual 6 speed? If it is, those tranny's are virtually bomb proof. Maybe they messed up the shift cables or something? Hope it works out well for you.

:cornut: Welcome to MA. We don't often hear of strange problems with R53s, at least not as often as 07-08 R56s( I own/drive Margi 08 BRG R56 MCS/JCWm and wouldn't trade her for anything so I'm not bashing R56s). In Texas if you're anywhere near DFW Metroplex, you should 'click on' Metroplexmini(a MINI club) to get excellent first hand advice about trustworthy experienced MINI shops that are perhaps even close to where you live. Good Luck!

Welcome to MA. Hope it's a minor issue. If you're anywhere near K-huevo, he should be more than able to help you.

    6-speed automatic

It is actually a 6-speed automatic with only 61k miles. I have spoken to a couple local shops (San Antonio) that work on Minis so I will see what some other say. I do know that I will be picking her up and having someone other than the dealer do this work. There is no way I am spending $9k on a tranny! I'll post updates when I know more.

    Transmission Issues

I spoke with Kieth at Werks Mini, and he is out for a while but gave me a good recommendation for another shop (Jesse at South Texas Automotive Specialists) that specializes in Minis and BMWs. I am having her moved tomorrow and hopefully we can solve this mystery...
