I don't know much about clutches so I'm posting this for you all:

So I noticed the other day a noise while I'm parked and the car is running. It's a ticking sound, but not the normal one the car has always made. It's slower and deeper than the "diesel" noise. It didn't notice it the next time I drove, so I dismissed it.

Well, I heard it today while I was waiting a moment for my car to heat up a bit before driving home from work. Since these clutch topics have been forward in my mind, I started playing around....

    Here's what I found:

The noise stops when I press in the clutch pedal. But when my foot is off of it, the noise returns. It's not real loud, but noticeable.... I'm pretty observant with my car's noises.

Could this be something with the clutch? The throwout bearing? Is it something I should wait on, or should I have the dealership look at it? I will be taking it in soon anyway for regular service/maintenance.

    Thanks for the help/advice.

Mine has made that sound for 50,000 miles or so. I believe it is a sound that the dual mass flywheel sometimes makes. My clutch functions fine so I've learned to ignore it. If you are still under warranty maybe you can get them to replace it, if not turn up the radio.

Maybe- seems like the only real way to get rid of it is to get a nice aftermarket set-up, which, I plan on if this ends up being an issue.

If you're still under warranty you'd be silly not to bring it in for a dealer check up. I hope it's nothing too bad as a whipping in a new clutch is damn expensive:cryin:

Why are you doing that? You are just pouring fuel down the pipe. Start her up, drive away easy and when the temp guage reaches optimum, THEN drive it like you stole it. If you are waiting for the heater to come to the party, well, thats what hats, coats and mittens are for.

I see. Lull them into a state of complacency just before you stir them into a frenzy. How devious of you.

    Well, Artemis is home....

The result? They said the noise was normal for that type of flywheel.
    Ah, ok?

I'm not worrying about it..... if it blows up on me and they don't cover it, I'm just going aftermarket and be done with it.

Oh the famous "they all do that". They go to school to learn to say such things with a straight face.

For what it's worth I think it will be OK. Mine has made noise for many miles & everything is fine.

    Yeah, what BS :mad5:

Whatever- like I said- if they don't cover it when it gives up I'm going aftermarket- already planning on doing an LSD at the same time :ihih:

Mine has been making an odd noise (flywheel) for 50,000 miles or so. I'm sure your will run a long time too. My MINI already has an LSD. :)

Mine has a factory LSD but that was exactly the noise I heard. Metallic chatter while in neutral and foot off the clutch pedal (clutch engaged) and then it goes away when you push down on the clutch pedal (clutch dis-engaged). The reason it got my attention in the MINI is that the dual mass flywheels in the 2006-2008 350Zs (like the one I had) had a tendancy to go bad and chatter like nervious chihuahua in the snow (like mine did). The net result is poor engagement and premature wear of the clutch disc.

They (MINI if Monrovia) tore mine down and found the funny wear on the clutch and the dual mass flywheel was flexing too far and it was all replaced. (I think you've seen that thread already. Post replacement no funny noises or engagement issues.

If the noise gets worse/more permanent I will take it back and insist they tear it open.

My clutch began to whistle like a teapot, first only when in motion but later on when idling as well. Just touching the clutch made it stop. It was diagnosed as a bad throwout bearing. Fortunately, the shop had a 40% off promo going on, so it only cost $900. Sadly, it's started again 6 months later - going in tomorrow for a warranty review (or trade in if they say it's normal!).
