Hey Gang, the kid got a JCW shift knob and parking brake handle for an early Christmas present. He go the shift knob on easy enough but has an issue with the brake handle. Go the original handle off but the new JCW handle is giving him a fit. The OEM handle had a tab to lift at the end to get it off the parking brake lever. The new JCW handle goes right on, but there isn't a locking tab to keep it on the lever. Anyone else run into this issue? I don't see any other way of keeping it on the lever. Hopefully I'm not missing something stupid. Any ideas? Thanks. BTW, I like the way they look, might have to see if Santa has an extra for the Clubbie!
That handle wasn’t thought out very well. I tried a few different approaches to securing it and the adhesive they say to use is worthless. Good luck with the challenge.
I did a friction fit....wrapped the metal with 3M electrical tape....in a criss-cross pattern. It will still wiggle side to side in the summer...if you try.
I used a thinner double sided tape from Home Depot and it has worked great hot or cold, no wiggles, its solid.
You guys rock! (Of course you already knew that!) Several different approaches to the same problem. Us MINI owners are inventive if nothing else. Owning a body shop I've got two way tape in 3 different sizes and two different brands of epoxy adhesives (Fusor and 3M/Dura-Mix). I think we're gonna try the electrical tape first just to see if he likes the JCW handle. That would be the easiest reversible method. After that,I think we're going with the two tape and if that looks iffy, it's the 2 parter! Thanks again guys!
We could never get the handle to mount solidly in the wife's car. We tried tape and adhesives and it would always eventually work it's way loose. I really don't know what they were thinking when they designed that handle. I finally got a Whalen handle for her that matched her shift knob and it is really solid and looks great.
Anybody else seeing the humor in this thread? Imagine that this is a forum for some other car, and you were reading about people who bought the most premium upgrade brake handle from the manufacturer, and having to install it (with only partial success) by wrapping it with tape and force fitting it.
It's sad that MINI and JCW for that matter would put out a half baked product like this. That's not how John Cooper would have wanted it done. It's almost like the guy's in the white lab coats (who eat sandwiches with a knife and fork) said......"Look it's 4:30 on a Friday, let's get this wrapped up and get out'ta here" :frown2:
Good damn point! Thank goodness the JCW mechanical parts work and fit better. Wait, they do don't they?...........
I just installed this last week and the tape method worked OK but with the heat here in Atlanta I didn't think it would hold up. I ended up using E6000 (E-6000 Benefits/Strength Test pg) and let it cure about 24 hours before use. It is solid and sat in the heat at Road Atlanta yesterday for hours and still felt solid when I got in the car to go home. I have used E6000 in past projects and it has always held up well.
