Here is a topic not often being discussed. I know TSW guys might be able to weight in on this. I think I might want to do a cam on my Justacoopah (now that it is out of warranty) for that little extra oomph. Who makes one, what are the advertised gains, what are real world gains, what else should be looked at?

Don't say head, not ready to go that route.

I would also be interested in this. I've been out of warranty so long I forgot it even came with one.

Here's the deal with cams for the base engines...

every time that someone asks for one, when one of the people who provide cams try to see how many they sell, they end up with really, really low numbers so they blow it off. Maybe now there might be enough, but you'll probably have to use something that's been done for the S and see how it works.

But, the car has been around for almost 8 years now. I am hoping things changed from 5 years ago. :mad2:

    Fact it...

not a lot of cooper owners are looking for power. If they were in that camp most likely they bought an S to start. Give Jan a call, or talk to Keith at Werkin Mini to see what they say. Or call up to Mini Mania and see what they've found thier cam does on a Cooper. As I understand it, the cams there aren't moving and they are willing to deal.

Not sure Mini Mania would be my choice under the best of circumstances.

    Why not?

Don's a decent guy. Mini Mania is one of the worlds largest parts suppliers to classic Minis... And the Ultrik is just a Schrick clone...

    But whatever floats your boat!

I don't remember why, but I know they are not on my personal approved vendor list.

Anyway, just talked to Jan. He does have a cam for Justacooper, but it is a race cam so all of the gains are up top. As I know my vert will never be a track star, I would prefer a cam that provides the gain down low for better street driveability. As Doc already said, might be too tall of an order.

This takes a bit of work...

but go with an adjustable cam gear and play with the cam timing. You should be able to get some torque out of it.

Adjustable cam gear in Cali? The DMV Police would be breaking down my garage door before I put the last bolt in. :eek:ut:

I have the MC Schrick in mine. The mechanic who installed it and I both, independently, came to the conclusion the car pulls noticeably harder starting a bit below 3K and significantly so from about 3.5K and up. Like you, I was hoping for more low end grunt, but I do enjoy the very obvious add'l kick in the pants in the mid-range...must be a significant new bump in the curve somewhere along there.

However, none of that is useful here because 1) I've never had it on a dyno so have no numbers, and 2) it was installed along with the new head anyway so there would have been no way to discern the cam's contribution. Given the changes I've made (esp. head/cam) I really need to get the thing tuned to get the full benefit.

The Schrick was the only thing available when I was buying. I know a couple others have come along since then that claim to better target the low end. Kent is one...I think CatCams is the other I heard of. Don't know enough to say I would choose something else over the Schrick if I was looking for one now, but I would definitely check them out.

Hay, if they can't see it...

and it sniffs clean, then eff em! Just do it!

But WTF! You'd do a non-CARB cam but not an adjustable cam gear?:eek:ut:

Well, Scott's had a couple of different cams in his Cooper, but they've been paired with ported heads. I set up a head and cam for another guy (Cooper CVT) about five years ago, but again it was a head that I ported.
