I am in the process of replacing the Knock or Ping Sensor in my 2002 S which is surprisingly difficult to get to. I have removed the front bumper, radiator etc as well as the intake manifold to finally get to where it bolts to the block. This is shown in the 1st picture direcly below the middle intake madifold stud bolt.
Access is tight but I'm thinking, great, I won't need to pull the SC. I start backing the 13MM bolt out and it hits the SC before comming loose, shown in 2nd pic. I don't know if the bolt is supposed to be this long or what? My thinking at this point is to pull the SC and change the oil, replace the water pump etc. I did not see much on this topic so thought I would add my experience to date and also request wisdom from others more experienced than I.
BTW - I am replacing the part due to a pack rat chewing the wire in 2. UGH!

When we do it we leave the intake manifold in place and take the supercharger loose. There is no way to get that bolt out without the Supercharger being loose. Just make sure you torque the sensor bolt when you put it back in, and index the wire back in the same direction it came off.

Ah, that would make sense. Yeah, came right out as soon as I got the SC loose. As stated above I will be replacing the water pump, Tstat and housing, drive belt and tensioner pulley too along with oil service on SC. If you happen to know the torque setting for KS it would be appreciated.

How to remove the Knock sensor without removing the supercharger on my 06 Cooper S

Do you have a write up on this method? Or do you just remove the top of the SC and then loosen the rest to remove the Knock Sensor? I see that the fuel rail is under there as well but I think you can get a around that... Correct me if I am wrong...
