say you had 2006 Mini Cooper "S" and you wanted to make 225 horsepower what is the best way to do this? what would this cost? would it be fine for daily driving? and trips? I am new here and been reading, looks like a 15% pulley, Exhaust, and a small cat delete( the one below the header) (i'm in arkansas no emissions testing) would help? I've read a better intake helps, but is this an actual intake manifold, or air intake? post up your receipes for 225 horsepower!!! Thanks in advance
before the rest of the guys chime in the best mod you can make is yourself. Attend some HPDEs'/Driving Schools. My personal soap box is to deal with the suspension before you start adding a bunch of extra power. Gotta be able to handle the car After that I think the biggest thing you can do to get your 225 is to get a custom tune to the ECU I would suggest talking to Way of Way Motor Works. He can assist you on giving you the straight scoop. Theres allot of guys running around doing tunes on r53's some good and some not so good
Best way? Sell your first gen MINI and get an R56 and tune THAT. LOL Depends on whether that 225 is at the crank or at the wheels. Also depends on how strong your specific car is to start with. Typically you're looking at pulley, head, tune, and a few other things to get in the 225 range... but some cars are stronger than others right off the lot.... Instead of picking a number... best way to do this in my opinion is to find a local MINI club and ride along with some other folks in modified MINIs. Find a car that has the performance characteristics you want... then find out what's different about it...
It must start with a big valve ported head. The camshaft will need to be one that performs well at high rpm. The stock header won't get you there, it'll have to be more free flowing. Larger injectors for sure. From there it's how much do you want to spend. MA member Chase made around 240 with an ENDYN head, 16% supercharger pulley, 2% crankshaft pulley, large intercooler, OBX header, loud exhaust, and an aftermarket intake, with a Mynes tune. http://www.motoringalliance.com/forums/engine-drivetrain/1247-werkin-mini-endyn.html http://www.motoringalliance.com/forums/engine-drivetrain/3791-mynes-v2-race-header-r53-taking-orders.html http://www.motoringalliance.com/forums/engine-drivetrain/2508-mynes-tuned-r53-reference-table.html WERKINMINI.COM | mini cooper parts, installation, repair, and maintenance | San Antonio
And an NS 2 NitroStick camshaft. See post # 8 http://www.motoringalliance.com/forums/engine-drivetrain/1247-werkin-mini-endyn.html Now that Endyn has designed camshaft optimized heads, it’s no longer necessary to trade low-end performance for top-end capabilities. Maximum sized valves and precision matched valve guides add to costs, but that’s the only downside. The head example below made 244 hp & 188 lb-ft tq on a 109F day, with an NS2 camshaft, an impressive 174 lb-ft at 3k rpm. WerkinMini can still get NS series parts or check with Fes-Atuo NitroStick - NS2 Camshaft
Start with a pulley, intake, and exhaust. Or just get our Street Performance Package which comes with everything you need to get a good street car. After those mods learn to drive that car, it will be plenty for the street. If you need more after that we'll get you the Head, cam, Intercooler, Injectors to make the big power.
WOW thanks for the quick replies, guys this board is great, I just left another mini Cooper board, because there was just no support there, pathetic really. anyways, I think I got the driving down, I'm 41 and raced most all my life (drag race) not into anything else much, I had a highly modded, eclipse GSX (all wheel drive turbo) with huge dual ball bearing turbo from PTE, GSC 280 cams, Header, Head, injectors, fidanza flywheel and act 2600 clutch, DSMlink to tune with and PLX R500 wideband owned a GMC syclone with a few mods, turbo, etc. it was #252 of about 3000 built right now I am racing a S-10 that go's 11.30s in the quarter I want the Cooper to drive daily and have some fun with, i've never even been in one, but will be getting a big enlistment bonus from the army (got it in Iraq so it's tax free) and I want a mini, I am thinking a 2006, as the price jumps a bit for a 2007, and I look the looks of the 2006 better, wrap around rear glass, different headlights, I am looking for a black one, thats a standard is there that much difference performance wise with a 2007, I understand turbos. and I hate turbo lag, specially when trying to launch, to little and you Bog, to bunch and you blow the tires off, anyway is a 2007 a better base to start with, and worth the extra $$$$ I said 225 horsepower because I want more performance, but not so much to take away from the reliability of the car, and dont want to spend thousands.
I ended up with a 2008 Mini, because it was the last year of the original body/old supercharged engine in the convertible. Knowing what I know now, I would have waited for the turbo version in the second generation. I'd suggest driving both and see which one feels like a better platform to start on and go from there? Mynes has a little yellow car they race in some series here in Southern California that I've had the pleasure of riding in. It SCOOTS. The more I think about it, the more I'd suggest going with a 2007 or newer with the turbo. Especially with your previous car background.
WOW I was just pricing things, I cant believe the performance stuff is as cheap as they are, I honestly was expecting stuff to be higher than most other cars, if you dont think so try to mod a Mitsubishi eclipse, all the DSM stuff is stupid high, 550.00 for a header, 1,400 for the turbo, 450 for the cams, 120 for cam gears, etc
just to get more detailed: I had the Alta V-1 intercooler (with leak), invidia exhaust (with leaks), cravenspeed intake (2 years dirty), NS2 cam, 550 injectors. It was 116 degrees outside according my my thermo and i had over 100k of hard miles on the car 243whp and 188tq
The above is a bunch of good ideas, my 06 is a fun ride. Still have no tune yet, but the 226 whp is whoot. Same mods as the rest just using my Ported Head.. so there is a lot to choose from. Just me....................................... THUMPER PS: Drag racing in your past?? Dontcha just love the FWD!!?? LOL (Also dont forget about the button!!) Thumper
All I have to say is that you need to find one with LSD! 225hp sucks if your tires start to slip (like around corners). If you get the last 7 (?) numbers of the VIN and bring it to a MINI dealer, or ask around on here, you can get a build sheet on it. That'll tell you if it has LSD or not. The used dealer I bought mine from told me mine had LSD, guess I shouldn't have believed them. But then again, I did get mine for about $2k less than similar MINI's I looked at, and mine did have more options than the rest. So I can't complain too much! :arf: But what I would suggest is to get a pulley (15% or 17%), plugs, wires, coil pack, cold air intake, injectors, exhaust, and a tune. This should get you up to where you want it to be. Plenty fast for a MINI. You can drop some pounds by getting the rear seat delete and getting a different crank pulley. I would probably stay the stock diameter, or else you have to change the alternator pulley as well. I see some people using a 2% pulley for the crank but I've heard some horror stories about them. That's a personal choice for you. They do make lighter pulleys out there that are stock diameter, saying it's basically like dropping 60lbs (from the rotational mass). I have a 15% pulley, plugs, wires, coil pack, and CAI, and I am plenty happy with the power difference. I will get an exhaust, injectors, and a tune eventually, but that'll be in the spring time. I just bought new suspension and all the bells and whistles to install it, so that plus my current power package, my MINI should be PLENTY FUN! And Way from Way Motor Works definitely knows EVERYTHING about MINI's! He's the man to talk to about ANYTHING you want to do. He doesn't push you to buy anything and will help you find what you NEED for what you want it to do! He talked me out of a few things before and directed me to get something else. Saved me money and it was better for me. Definitely give him a call about it! OH! And some good tires!!!
i made 224/196 at the tires on a header/cam combo, my car ran fabulous. really if i was smart that what i would have stuck with but look where that got me... a head and a new cam. you know power is addictive! spend wisely I would suggust starting with a pulley catback and intake and see how you feel you might be supprised if not go with the header cam combo and a ecu tune. i got reasonable milage like that now i really well don't. Enjoy!
I use mine daily, and enjoy every minute, with 250 WHP:lol:. It still drives nicely in the traffic, and kicks you in the butt when you plant the right foot. The higher rev range takes a bit of getting used to, but I love it! I started with the 15% pulley, Alta CAI and then the Milltek Cat Back and kept that for about a year. Then I recently moved on to the BVH, Cam, Header, Injectors and RMW tune. Like others have said before, make sure you don't forget to improve the brakes and suspension!
There are a lot of good deals on used cars right now. Just got a call today from a customer who bought a 2009 JCW Clubman for $24k with 9k miles... that's literally a STEAL. It has the two-tone red seats with HK sound... new from the dealership, that car is about $45k plus tax. The turbo ones tend to me more torquey so coming from a drag race background, that might be more appealing to you. 1st gen: 2002 to 2006, supercharged 1.6L. EPA is about 24mpg and 160wheel hp. To make this car into 225whp (dynojet power) will cost you about 4-6k in upgrades (if not more). Powerband for this car is from 4500 RPM to redline. 2nd gen: 2007 to present, turbo-charged direct injection. EPA is about 30mpg. It makes about 160 wheel hp, 190 wtqe. To get this car into 220whp range will cost you about $2k. Powerband for this car is from 2500rpm to 5500 rpm. I have driven both and each gen has it's perks. The 1st gen's chasiss feels more rigid and a better road feel. The 2nd gen has a 'looser' steering feel (but the car still handles extremely well), but with a little suspension mods, that can be much improved. For daily driving, the 2nd gen (R56) is a more economical car plus you're almost always in the power band. The best thing is to test drive both and decide from there. I've seen 2008 R56 with 20k miles go as low as $18,000... lots of good deals out there. Just my 2 cents
a jcw for that price mike sign me up seriously. to add to what mike said generally the turbo car makes a signifigant amount more torque than hp.
