And in 2007 the real John Cooper Works cars ended and BMW took over and made the JCW into a silly sticker package that every MINI could get. * except the GP’s those are still special. That’s the time when real JCW’s died.
They turned JCW into the MINI version of the "M" Package(s). That being said. I love that my car has the JCW body kit, cuz it's sweet
The sad thing on the BMW side M use to mean something. I still droll over the e30 M3's. Its the only car I would part with my Mini for and yes I hope your sitting down even the Helmet
@MCS02 - thanks for posting.. good video that I agree, most people don't know the heritage. Regarding the E30 M3.. they are very nice. Homologation cars.... LOVE THEM. They are now stupid expensive. They are also stupid expensive to maintain (even if you wrench on them yourself). Like you, I would still own one if I could. That said, I'm biased. I'm the R53 guy of the M world until recently. I currently own the E28 (Highly modified) and the E39 (Bone stock.. LeMans Blue/black interior) and previously E34 highly modified M5's. The E28 and E34 were hand built. When you took apart the engine, the builder credentials were on every rod, piston etc. Great cars... but stupid expensive. A stock rebuild in parts is right at $5K - $7K. Modified... if you have to ask, don't do it. My favorite was the E34. With the new import laws, still would love to own the E34 3.8... yea... My E28 currently has its heart pulled out.. New crank, High compression pistons (love the 80's.. not), valves.. will be a good time when complete. That said, I hated the V10 (Drove one and considered buying the manual). Just wasn't the same. The engine is super cool (Torque sucks), the rest not so much. However the M1 and M4 are pretty good... actually the M1 is crazy. Also the E39.. can be very good. With all that, I was a hater for the new M cars until I came to realize, I'm a homologation guy. I want raw cars. Its hard to make a living on raw limited run cars from a production standpoint. So I now accept that every once in awhile a real car will come. The challenge now is those homologation cars are crazy. The new GT40 for example (Sweet car)... out of 99.99999% of peoples range. We need DTM back (the real DTM).. then we get real cars like the E30 M3 that had to be built to race... with production numbers around 1500.. Here you go... turn down the volume music wise. But this IMO was real, raw, racing that produced a number of cars that we could buy (at one point) that were frankly.. bad a$$.. just my 2 cents. Wish that would come back.. not in the forum it grew into.
I was looking at a black e30 M3 when I found my Mini. It was up north, a BMW tech owned it, it was beautiful. He only wanted 15k for it. The Red mini pop up and I bought it instead. I though at the time I would get the M later. If I had known how the prices would go up I would have done it the other way.
Yea - no kidding.. I bought the M5 because I needed a usable back seat for adults..and it’s was $7,500.. in retrospect.. screw them I would have bought E30 M3 evo. That said, the problem is I mod cars. All the M3s are worth a bunch now.. but stock ones are worth a ton. I even saw a 88 M5 (very clean low miles stock) go up for somewhere around 100k.. not sure if they got it or not.. but that was/is crazy. Needless to say mine wouldn’t be nearly that much.. more like $25k.. once I have the engine back in it. My boys told me something... said I’m not in the garage.. am I feeling ok? Rather than calling it Vader.. they now call it humpty... Yea garage is a mess after the fire.. still working on that.. needs the engine to go back in. Man that dust from the fire sucks. Everywhere.. That said have to finish the boys Mini RZR first.. converting to fuel injection and it will be setup to take a turbo if they grow I into being able to handle the built engine they are getting... Now off to camping with them... see y’all Sunday.

Agreed.. like the look. You will not be happy... but stroker engine almost done.. so this is how garage looks..
Agree.. mostly. I know old school BMW. Owned a number of the 80's ones (E28, E34 3.6, E34 3.8, E30......plus other 80's cars that are fun). When they went to anyone can can buy a spoiler package I was very frustrated... However, I came to the conclusion (Not saying its right.. maybe self consolidation) the big difference is racing doesn't have true homologation. DTM, WEC, LeMans..even NASCAR all don't really support homologation cars. When the M's were in their prime, they were homologation cars. The overall market and racing scene has changed. That said, JCW was different. But the founder died and the son sold (based on my research). To me, the GP is the closest thing to an original JCW.. performance without compromise.. or not much. It will be a quirky, issue based car but can go fast when stuff is right. The JCW (like current "M" cars) is a hoot for 99% especially with a tune and the new F engine... (i.e. 2.0 BMW) and won't have the same problems as the "80's M" or "JCW" built engines. If racing brings back homologation (fingers crossed) we will see these again. The only homologation car I know of currently in "production" is the GT (i.e. GT40.. not attainable). Chevy is going to produce a mid engine and sell it (Price TBD.. and qualification to buy TBD). Porsche I don't believe is going to sell their mid engine (but they "make" it for LeMans). Also don't forget Mini brand was only sold in limited markets (not US). BMW brought you the ability to own something somewhat similar without importing etc. The Gen 1 is the closest to what the original was without bushing suspension... whatever that is worth... I've driven a Gen 1, Gen 2, Gen 2 Modified, Gen 3. Compared to my E39 M5 (MOTD 2017) in the mountains, I'll take the Gen 2 Modified GP. Just my 2 cents..... don't ask about the 88 M5.. And to be clear - would love a true JCW no hold bar Mini.. or MINI. Just saying, its business and they are producing fun, fast cars. Styling is preference.
@Sully I tell you what. Because I am generous I will train you my 1969 Moto Guzzi for the M car. They are in about the same shape.
