Yes, you did read that correctly...

Just to be sure I'll say it again...

MINI Countryman Nominated for 2012 North American Truck Of The Year

I've seen lots of Countryman's (Countrymen?). I've even driven a few. I've also driven trucks of all shapes and sizes and in my not so humble opinion a Countryman a'int no truck. Neither NHSTA nor the EPA classify the Countryman as a truck.

    WTF are these people smoking.

Then again the rest of list is decidedly un-truck like.

    BMW X3
    Honda CR-V
    Land Rover Range Rover Evoque
    Mercedes-Benz M-Class
    Nissan Quest
    Saab 9-4X

Looking over that list this needs to be renamed to the 2012 North American Crossover Of The Year.

Trucks have names like F-150, Ram, Tundra and Sierra 3500.

I've always thought the North American Car and Truck Of The Year awards were a joke anyway. This reinforces that notion and removes all doubt from my mind.

Countryguy = truck = yes way. Now where did I put my water?

Well really it is a sorta car wanna be a trucklet sort of thing. A compromise car/trucklet. For many folks it will be perfect.

No truck loving countryguy will ever consider a Countryman a truck on any level......even while drinking fire water. LOL

*Disclaimer: I like the Countryman as a small SUV but will keep my Tahoe which is a full size SUV that I consider a truck. :)

They do car of the year as well. Just for fun I sent them an email asking for the list of criteria used to determine whether a vehicle qualifies as a car instead of a truck and vice versa. No, I don't expect an answer...

I've tried to put myself in the shoes of those who decide whether a vehicle fits into this or the other (NA Car of the Year) category and I think I understand the dilemma. The way I see it if you try to define specific criteria for a car category and a truck category based on traditional characteristics then you'll need at least a third category called "other" into which you can lump all the stuff that doesn't fit neatly as "car" or "truck." I'm guessing the NACTOY organizers want to add no additional categories but also want to exclude no one and therefore have to figure out how to fit every nominee in as either a car or a truck.

So if i am reading this correctly; there were NO good options for a proper TRUCK as the buying public will define...but according to those who make the rules we now have vehicles which have no ability as to what a TRUCK was intended up for honors in a category which now has no relevance due to its confused state of being...

get the five year olds back in charge...they will tell exactly what a truck is!
