In my other life (the one that pays for my MINI addiction) I have been a photojournalist for nearly 30 years. I'm currently the Senior Video Producer at the St. Pete Times/tampabay.com and about eight months ago I became the Gadget Guy. Since I have been the research, development and technical support person for the Photo department for many years, my boss cooked up this idea for me to do a technology blog.

The blog has been very successful and they now want me to do it full-time in addition to editing and producing videos. I write daily about lots of things and much of it would be of interest to the MINI community. Tons of iPhone and Android app news, cool gadgets and offbeat things are my main focus.

Yesterday I did a piece on a cool app for Android and iPhone that turns your phone into a walkie-talkie. I immediately thought of the MINI community and how cool it would be to use that app in caravans and at MINI events.

Use your iPhone or Android as a walkie-talkie

I have manufacturers sending me stuff to review all the time so if there's a gadget you're interested in, let me know and I'll try to get it and write about it. Thanks!

Those are neat! Too bad we can't rely on phone service down at MOTD to use that instead of radios. I guess I'm still going to have to buy a walkie talkie...

That would be great but Bluetooth is really a short-range technology (like 30 feet). Direct Wi-Fi connections would be better. Right now it works over 3G, Edge and WiFi networks. The quality is better than a phone call and the map feature shows you where the other person is. In the car, it's better than texting because you don't have to type. Just press the button to listen to the message.
