Did anyone catch the news yesterday about the Mythbusters errant canon shot, they were doing a segment for the show and their ball from a canon shot hit a earthen berm and flew 700 yards into a neighborhood flying completely through a house and ending up in a minivan parked across the street from the house. I bet that wasn't in their plans at all....
It must have been an incredibly powerful shot to go completely through the house, and leave perfectly round holes like this in the walls: It sounds funny when you first hear about the story, but it could have killed multiple people. The exit hole:
A management team I belonged to had a motto: "Never let them know that whatever happens that shouldn't happen isn't planned". If Jamie and Adam had just jumped up and down high fiving each other no one would be the wiser...right?
Most people don't realize that a lot of homes can be easily entered with a "box knife" as long as you make your cuts in the wall between the wooden studs. Exception being a stone or brick houses. A vinyl sided house is little more than 1/16" of vinyl, 5/8 of fiberboard, fiberglass insulation and 1/2" of plasterboard. Absolutely no resistance to a cannon ball bouncing across a yard. I'll huff and I'll puff, and I'll blow your house down.
I don't see a lot of insulation in that first picture. I'll bet the home owner sues the builder right after they sue the TV folks. Next will come the "class action" suit by all the builders other customers. Jim
First pic is probably an interior wall which normally doesn't have insulation. The second pic of the exterior you can clearly see the pink insulation.
I bet they wont get to use the Alameda bomb range any more. I also wonder if they will show the incident in full on their show.
Holy :eek6: I didn't realize how frigging far that thing went! I surer hope they don't have to stop using the bomb range though. Mythbusters is my favorite show, Top Gear is second :biggrin5:
I read that they missed the barrier -- barrels filled with water? -- and the ball was launched upward by the curve of the earthen berm behind it like it was a ramp.
Any TV show loves having unexpected extra material to air. I would imagine that they will have at least an extended segment, possibly even devote an entire show dissecting everything in detail. It will draw a large audience.
Yeah, they need to marry it up with the guys from Top Gear. Put Clarkson in the minivan and get him to run a road course and see how many cannon balls he can take hits from......
They promised that they would not air footage shot of the errant cannon blast (avoiding the possible perception that they might capitalize on their mistake.)
