Just a quick question. My tire are getting close to being worn out and I am starting to look at replacements. Current size is 205/45-17 and they are RF's. I do not want to put RF's back on. I have read good things about the Goodyear F1 All-Season, but when I look on TireRacks's web sit I do not see that tire in the size I currently have installed. Are you guy's using a different size or am I just missing something.

    Thanks,
    Lon

    Try 215/45/17. Much better.

Sorry for a stupid question, but this size will fit on same rims and clearance is till good?
I never have really understood tire sizing.

And in what way is this size better? Do they wear any better/worse?

    Thanks,
    Lon

Several different sizes will work, depending on the wheel. 215x45x17 will work, so will 215x40x17.

To understand the numbers better you might take a look at tirerack's guide: Tire Tech Information - A Guide to Tire Sizes

For the most part, people seem to select different sizes just based on availability. On tirerack's site, for example there are 27 tires listed under 215x40, 36 tires under 205x45, 80 tires under 215x45 -- including your Goodyear F1 All Season. 215's will just be a little wider than your current 205's and will fit fine.

For questions, call Alex at Tire Rack. He had a Mini and is very familiar with fitments and tradeoffs both by size and tire type / cost. [email protected]

(pssst: the more common size of 215/45/17 is usually less expensive as well).

In one of the many threads over at the other place.

A couple tires have been recommended.

Bridgestone Re960 Pole Position All Season

Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus (make sure they are the plus).

Good things have been said about the Goodyear F1 Asymmetric

I am running Nitto NeoGen in 215/45/17, good tire for summer A/S rated but I would not use them in winter. They tramline on grooved highway, but are great on a smoother road surface, very quiet.

I have GY F1 GS-D3 on my 16s, I use them on track and general driving, quiet and very good ride. Not the best for track but ok for me.

I had a set of A/S Falken 912 in 16 for about 14K miles, they blew out with noise and went hard, so I would not recommend these to anyone.

    Don
