    Greetings everyone.

I maintain my wife's 2007 Mini Cooper S Convertible. I do maintenance on the following vehicles in my own garage, Mini, Porsche, Suburban, Mountaineer and Jeep. I enjoy working on the vehicles as a hobby and to save some money.

Currently chasing down a leak from the Oil Filter cap and the root cause for an EML light with P1688 code and a resultant "Limp Mode" by the Mini. The oil filter cap is strange. No cross threading but it still leaks. Seem like the rubber gasket is just not thick enough. Going to try another filter/gasket today.

Oh yeah, we really enjoy the Mini here in central Virginia. We ride the Blue Ridge Parkway, Skyline drive and other road for vineyards and breweries. A lot of fun in this car.

    Welcome to M/A...

    OEM or Mann filters FTW...

The "O" ring on the filter housing can get "nicked" easily.. Make sure there are no sharp edges on the housing..

Coat the rubber with oil and re-install... This should fix the leak problem

Thanks for the welcome - from everyone. It is a Mann Filter. I removed and checked it out closely and replaced with the same result. It seems as if the O-ring is not thick enough to seal the cap. I can start the car and see the oil leaking out of the seam between the cap and the filter housing.

Yes, Virginia is a beautiful state. Couple of months we will have the fall and the leaves changing color - good stuff.

Thought this through with the parts in my hand and came to the conclusion that the o-ring was not the right diameter. So, I went to my local parts store and picked up a WIK filter for $7. I did so because the o-ring diameter was larger. I replaced the filter and the o-ring with the WIK. Problem solved. Tight as new. Test drive with no leaks.

I have the BMW Mini part number that had the wrong size 0-ring. That part number is 11 42 7 512 446. I wonder if this is the wrong filter for the W11? I will check. Nonetheless, ii is for certain that the wrong o-ring was in the kit.

Just checked and this is the correct kit. I did notice that the o-ring was not in plastic bag and placed inside the box. The 0-ring was packed in the bottom of the filter box with no protection. I purchased the kit from a local Indy shop. I'm going back with the box and 0-ring and let them know what happened.

Get one from the dealer. It comes with the correct o-ring. I don't usually get filters from a dealer but for the mini I do. There lots of cases where people have had problems with non OEM filters. I believe they are $15, it's worth the money.

Next time I will do so, however, the WIK is working fine. Thanks.

I usually buy OEM/Mann/Mahle filters online, in bulk. Costs less to buy that way, and I'm going to need them by changing the oil/filter every 5000.

    Oh, and welcome to MA.
