Agreed with all of the above. My daughter's X5 is a great drive. It's a little frustrating sometimes to find a diesel pump in a pinch, but Nav and an iPhone has made that a little less challenging.
Why does everyone want a diesel? The fuel cost more. I see no reason to ever own a diesel unless its is big truck to plow snow.
The torque is monumental. For daily commuting it does well with fuel needing far fewer fill-ups, a time saver. It's good for the US CAFE regulations, that is if a Diesel counts towards CAFE. It broadens the MINI market. If MINI only built R53's, as some would like, they would probably no longer be in business.
Speaking as one who spends quite a bit of time at the dog park, and on occasion rents a Prius, I'd say it's about even... ...but I do like diesels, drove them for 25 years, I like the concept of compression ignition...
Last diesel I owned was a 7.2 in my F250 for towing the Alfa Romeo to races. It got the job done. I have driven a few in Europe, they actually do quite well and love the low end torque to move along, which is about all you can do on the small roads around the UK, Norway and France. Don
