Sure the battery wasn't almost dead to begin with? A lot of times when the battery is too weak to turn the car over, the relay will open and close rapidly.

When was the battery last replaced? This is very common in a MINI when the battery is low. Also door locks will do funky things, the speedo needle will often jump around and lights may flicker.

i don't believe it has anything to do with the battery because even with a trickle charger on it i can't get it to even click when i turn the key. this leads me to believe that it is a power draw or a short circuit somewhere in the wiring. Anyone heard of any case of this?

If the battery is dead a trickle charger will not start the car. How many amps is your battery drawing while charging, if it has a bad cell it wont take a charge?

I have to go with Mark and Nathan on this one. You should get a new battery.

im on the fence with the battery i did put a new one in, and it does start but im going to wait and to see if this battery holds a charge over the next couple days or if it gets drained, that'll will ultimately reveal my problem.

On a Gen 1 check the jump start connection under the hood, mounted on the firewall, in a small black plastic box on the left hand (drivers side). This is a positive connector that sometimes comes loose or get corroded and will give the feedback that you are receiving.
