hi guys, asking on this site since it seems to have the most activity....i want to change my oil more frequently than the service intervals call for...especially the first one (break-in garbage). does anyone know the brand of the filters mini is using? service says bring it to them for service but i want to do this one myself as well as the ones in between and want no hassles with warranty etc. called parts any they were no help.
    thanks , ben 2012 countryman

I've been using Mann oil filters in my 09 MCS with no problems. Just my 2 cents.

    Mann part #HU 711/51X.

I've looked at some alternatives (I'm a former auto parts guy) but haven't found an improvement on what my local dealer's parts counter offers, <$8 each with our local club discount. I've bought 3 so far for oil changes in my garage.

Not sure if Mann is the OE supplier to MINI but they are to BMW. There is a thread on the "other" forum about the differences of the OE, OE supplier, and Mann filters being different.

And for the life of me I can not remember the OE supplier's name.

GermanFilters.com usually has a good price, though they changed hands recently and I haven't ordered from them since. Looks like they're right around the $8 mark for an MCS filter.

I pay about $35 including tax for 5 quarts of MINI oil and a factory filter at my dealer. I buy it the for the same reason, even tho I have a great dealer, I don't want any hassles if I need warranty work.

Fortunately or not, that time will run out this time next month, but I think I'll still buy the factory filter from them. Saving 50¢ or even a dollar on something that I only buy once a year just isn't worth it, when my dealer is just down the road.

I will be going to Mobil 1 tho, same as my other cars - I can get the 5 qt jug of 5W30 from Wal Mart for as low as $20.

Look up sewellparts.com on the internet. One of their car lines is MINI. You can order OEM parts at good prices...the more you order, the less the shipping charge per piece. Periodically, they even have "sales". So, open at account and go forward! The dealership is located in Plano, TX.

Many of the M/A sponsors offer a package with a few filters at a cost that is much lower than most dealers. That's not to say that the dealers on M/A have high prices. They too are competitive.

It would behoove you to use OEM filters while under warranty and keep the receipt showing you purchased OEM filters. The few extra bucks you will spend for OEM over an aftermarket filter is not worth the potential issues if your dealer is a stickler.

Very good point Nathan. I'm on my own dime now so I buy either of those two. They both look good to me. :ihih:

The 09 MCS is on my dime and the 12 Justa gets the OEM filter since it has free maintenance.

    thanks for all the responses...
i am not trying to save a few cents, that's why i wanted to use the "official" filter and needed the information as to the manufacturer ( i know you weren't implying that). i am beginning to think living on the west coast must make dealers mark their prices way up.
i wish i could get my filter and oil for 35.00... for reference and what started me on this quest was the dealer i bought my car from wanted 22.00 for the filter and another dealer quoted 15.00.
i am beginning to feel gouged.
i wonder what they would charge me to change the oil?
anyway got all the answers that i needed.
thanks again to all for letting me bend your ears, ben

Join a MINI club! I get a 10% discount on anything I buy at my local dealer. I bought a package of six oem filters from Out Motoring

    MINI Cooper Oil Filter

I get MINI brand oil from the dealer for $7 a quart, so there's about $40 an oil change.

I haven't had to change my own oil yet, but I'm ready!

I don't drive the MINI very much! I have six other cars to wear out, I can't drive them all at once!

    Dave
