2nd Gen R56 Cooper S Oil leak after timing chain tensioner repair

    I have a 2009 Hardtop S. Has anyone else had any problems with oil leaks or oil burning after having the tensioner and the timing chain replaced? I was told by the dealer that I my car was low 2 qts of oil after I heard a rattle when driving a while after the timing chain incident. I was told by the dealer service people that the car burns a quart of oil normally every 1000 miles and I should check the oil level every 1000 miles. I have been neurotically checking the oil and did not find that the car was burning oil after 1000+ miles. Recently I was told by the dealer that the car was leaking oil from the valve cover. It almost seems too coincidental that all the oil issues have occured after the timing chain and tensioner were replaced.

    The valve cover is not torqued to the correct spec and probably torqued in the correct order.

    Correct order, center out , Cylinder head cover to cylinder head 12 nm.

    Welcome to the forum,

    I purchased a 2007 MCS in March and had to replace all timing chain components, after the repair oil started leaking around my coils! Even before I had the timing chain components replaced I was burning a quart of oil every 800 miles, after replacing my valve cover with a new updated one I'm burning no measurable oil.

    My cyclone separator was stuck open (PCV system) inside the valve cover, that's why I was burning oil. Now I'm not burning any measurable oil. It seems like the valve covers (integrated PCV system) start going bad around 50,000 miles, this is where some find out all of a sudden that their starting to burn oil for the first time.
