You've probably lost the little valve from the bottom of your filter cartridge, do you still have the old filter? You might find it stuck to the old one.

And I just bought a replacement filter from Advance Auto Parts. However I had no problems until I replaced my oil.

I would only use an OEM MINI filter. There have been horror stories about using others including issues such as you have. Someone can give you more information on the black valve.

I don't think there's a valve on the 1st gen oil filters, but a bunch of oil filters were modeled after the early '02 pre-production design. MINI changed up the filter design at the last minute, and unless you're buying a Mann-, Wix- or BMW/MINI-branded filter, you could have problems.

Picking up an OEM tonight, will check to see if that doesn't fix it.

It's a problem with the filter. I only use the OEM ones.

The 1st Gen S does not have anything in the filter canister.

Well I replaced it this morning. Looks like the light is a bit more active. I added a qt of oil and will check it out once the oil has settled on lunch. Thanks for your input everyone.
