Does anyone know who is the OEM supplier for paint to MINI for the R53s? was it PPG or another manufactor? the paintshop that is working on my mini is doing it the old school way with sprayouts however he thinks my Liquid yellow is a different variation...any ideas?if i knew the supplier i could help him narrow down the possible variations of the color....this is more than simply blending the paint as there is a pigment added that is different than the base LY
I use PPG and did a Liquid Yellow bumper corner last summer and the forumla supplied by my e-fich was dead on.
I spray with DuPont Centari and the match is spot on. To get the correct tint you need to supply your paint vendor with the VIN. If they can't mix to VIN find another supplier. Where are you located?
Im located in florida...does someone have a way to match my paint with the vin and give me a readout on the pigments used?
A paint supplier will mix the paint for you and has the ability to give you the formula usually broke down by grams. If they will is a question that you will need to pose to the supplier.
Ive been told that "Glasurit" was the paint supply company for the 1st gens. No idea for the 2nd. Also, if you are car is more then a couple years old, it has changed color. So the best method is to go to a competent shop that has the ability to put a special camera to the paint. With that, and over several areas they get a good idea of the color your car is now.
That's a European BASF product that I don't believe we can get here. Any of the majors...duPont, PPG, Sherwin-Williams, Akzo-Nobel...can provide the correct match. The most common reason for a poor match on the substrate is environmental conditions when spraying (i.e. humidity levels, temp., static electricity, etc.). When spraying a bumper questions such as, what etch primer was used to prep the substrate (bulldog being a standard etch), what primer tone was used? (light gray, top coat color match, dark gray, etc.) as all of those can shade the topcoat differently.
I know for a fact you can get it here in the US. Where you get it, i have no idea, but you can. By no means am i saying one brand is better over the other, i sincerely have no experience with the spraying of paint, i merely just answering the OPs question.
the painter dropped off the paint back to the supplier he got it from (he uses sherwin williams) and come to find out there are 4 variants of LY out there...so they are doing some mixing and spray outs to to get a match plus they pulled the boot handle off to have a part to match to...should have it straight today
Boot handle isnt the best place for sourcing the paint color, b/c it is plastic the paint is going to be slightly different then the metal surfaces. So unless you are painting the bumpers are something, then the color still wont match sadly... Paint is PITA, isnt it ? lol
actually the plastic part isnt a bad option since what is getting painted yellow is the R53 aero kit and the arches...only metal part is the hood but from what ive seen from all of the pics i have of the car the paint is a pretty uniform color....problem is the florida sun has faded it pretty good...it was in better shape in socal...it should get resolved today...looking back on it i should have just spent the extra and got the whole body redone instead of panel painting...but really...4 different versions of 1 color...would it be so hard to just stick with 1 variant...i mean really MINI?
We've used everything over the years, from Glasurit to Sikkens and DuPont. All match pretty good. Sikkens was about the least user friendly to use. Glasurit was decent, but we had several colors that weren't available in the Glasurit line, but were available in their Diamont, at which point we switched over to Diamont. Saved us a ton of money mith absolutely no adverse effect on warranty coverage. That's important since we give a lifetime warranty on spot paint. Having said that, any good painter should be able to match anything. Most shops that mix their own paint, should be able to tint and match any color thats off a bit. Using the camera is a little easier, but still not exact. Every paint manufacturer has variants to most colors. A spray sample is the only way to know which variant is on your particular car. I remember Honda BG23P had something like 7 different variants with Glasurit. Fun times in the paint shop for sure! But as mentioned earlier, there will be some discoloration as well as some possible yellowing of the factory clear, even over the original yellow.
alas a match was found...as i suspected there was a bit of green pigment in it...got a call that they got a dead on match...might need a bit of tinting but the pigmentation is right...did find out that my mini had some repspray at some point in its life but no mention of it on carfax so it could have been a factory defect or a touchup at the vdc...or the previous owner did some off the book stuff...very interesting
