1st Gen R50 Cooper PS Failed

    This morning I started up my car and drove to a 7/11 with no problems. Upon returning to the car, my power steering was completely dead. I had the rack replaced a few weeks ago due to a leak and everything has been working fine, but today things aren't so good. The fluid level is correct and the replacement fluid used was the rare and difficult to find beads of sweat from a female brontosaurus so it isn't that either. I probably have about 500 miles on the car once the work. The rack was a reman unit but before I pursue that as the trouble source should I be looking anywhere else?

    Make sure the PS fan is connected. There is an electrical connection that could have come loose.

    This happened to my car last week at Helix while Mike was working on my car.
    He pulled it out for a test drive and pulled it right back in. I said what's up? He said I had no PS, but he knew why. Up on lift, click plug by PS fan, down on ground, PS back.

    Either the fan or the pump. Hoping it's any easy plug it back in fix for you. :fingerscrossed:

    Check F39 Fuse box 2

    fuse box on driver side A-pillar. I think its a 5A. If it blows no PSP (or alternator).

    The power steering pump is a common failure, and there is a good possibility it is the problem. After many complaints (and some accidents), MINI extended the power steering pump warranty to 13 years/150K miles, but only for cars with a production date of 2/2005 or earlier. Check the production date on your door plaque.

    The power steering on my '06 cabrio failed last year. Not covered by the warranty because it's an '06 :mad:.

    Not one to argue especially with Dave but the fan will not cause the pump to fail. Prior to deleting my pet steering I removed my seized fan and tab without it for 2.5 years with a working pump. I'd say it's a dead pump

    I live in the south and no fan is the kiss of death. If you made it that long you were lucky. At least that's what I've seen.

    North Carolina gets pretty hot as well. And working at a dealer as a tech you see lots of dead fans and not dead pumps. Put your car on a lift and take a look. The fan doesn't really blow much on the pump

    Yea pretty much the same tempter. I know My pump overheated when my fan stopped working. Your correct its not much air but it helps add to the service life.
