anyone happen to know if the auto dimming rearview can be bought and installed to replace a manually dimmed rearview mirror... without the need to reprogram all kinds of BS or run new wiring harnesses through the roof of the car?

MINI in question is an R53 w/ an 11/05 build date.

Yes I believe that it can. There is a how-to posted over on the sewing site. I love my auto dimming mirror.

I don't really care for the auto dim feature... i'm just looking to get rid of the detoxing whore that is rattling around inside of my manual mirror. with the upgraded motor mounts I've installed.... it turns out i've changed just enough of the transmitted vibrations into the rearview mirror. that when i'm in the daily commute traffic, the prerlferred gear and speed usually equates to the mirror's resonant frequency... and it's driving me batshit.

NVH that is why I've stayed away from those mounts. Can't stand those not so good vibrations.

Why do you think a self dimming mirror will be better?

I'm wondering if what you're hearing is the receiver vibrating and or rattling.
It's a printed circuit panel for the key fob that is inside the mirror housing.

What you can do is replace the mirror with one from a 2002 to 2004 car.
You just need to take the mirror apart and stuff the receiver in the overhead.
Other than no circuit panel and a smaller overall size the mirrors are interchangeable.

Might be less money than an auto-dim.

    Hope this helps...

Maybe. Don't suppose anyone knows where to go for assembly drawings for the rearview?! (And I don't mean realoem.com)

    Found these

It's for a 2009 but if I remember correctly there is not a lot of difference between 1st and 2nd gen here.

my initial question is a irrelevant a this point. Thanks again Nathan for finding that perfect little photo album.:Thumbsup:

Now, I obviously did not do it for the same reason... but I have now hid that circuit board in my headliner above my driver's side sun visor. After a quick little test drive, holding the rpms at the place of rattle inducing resonance, it seems that the dextoxing whore has been freed from her cage and is tucked away in a bubble-wrap comforter.

The other unintentional bonus to this nifty little mod... now, while at the dragon, when I remove the rearview mirror - I'll still be able to lock the car remotely!
