Recently purchased an 04 mcs with 96k. Dealer looked it over and gave the following list of needed repairsil pan gasket & crankshaft sensor o-ring; control arm bushings (torn); strut mounts (mushroomed); valve cover gasket & spark plug socket gaskets; res to pump p/s hose; right hydraulic motor mount; tires -front bald, rear feathered; right front rally light (glass broken);clutch kit, clutch bolts, guide tube (seller included clutch parts & control arm bushings). Should I avoid diy on any of these? Should any of the repairs be done at the same time for efficiency? Are any urgent? Tires are @ 30 to 40% tread remaining. Which Bentley repair book should I purchase? I found 2 different books for the 04.
If the gasket repairs are only because of weeping, and not full on leaking on the floor, they can be addressed later, or just ignored. Tower deformation is an easy fix, post#6. The strut guide supports will need to be replaced. Many of the other DIY stuff can be found here and here. Only you can answer the question about doing it yourself, look through the DIY library links and make you own assessment. Control arm bushing replacement, clutch repair, and PS hose leak fix can be performed at the same time. There are three Bentley iterations for the first generation MINI, the hard bound with electrical troubleshooting is the most comprehensive across all first generation model years.
Thanks k-huevo Thanks k-huevo, very helpful. So would you recommend the hardback version? I swapped out the clutch on my MGB in the early 70s. Would like to tackle the repairs myself. As for gaskets, no oil on floor.
