1st Gen R53 Cooper S Resurrecting an old issue that I still cant diagnose

    Still trying to figure out a noise I get under hard acceleration around 2500-3000 rpm. I did find a video with the exact noise. Start watching around the 60 sec. mark.

    I have it narrowed down to maybe dampener, idler pulley, or timing tensioner...

    Possible crank pulley also? How many miles on your car?

    81000 miles on the clock. I have serviced the supercharger, and have done a visual inspection on the crank pulley (checking to see if the rubber was worn).

    How old's your belt? Looks like the two pulleys are pretty darn close, there. Check to see you've got a full hole showing in the tensioner strap. WHile you're replacing the belt, install a tensioner travel limiter (like $20 from Detroit Tuned).

    I had a similar noise, after servicing the supercharger it went away - likely because we installed the new belt... also heard that waterpump "gears (really 2 splines) can make a similar noise.

    Video is just one I pulled form youtube with a similar noise to my car. Just replaced the belt about two weeks ago.

    While we are on the topic of the video, the source of the video states that he has replaced most of the "normal" parts that can create a ticking noise on the R53. I am in the same boat. I have read on numerous other forums and posts with others that shared the same noise as I, but there has been no conclusion to the issue. Stumped

    You might want to throw an idler pulley on there.

    What Crashton said! I just changed mine... It was quite disturbing to see how much side to side play there was. Mine was making similar noises around 1500-3000rpm.

    thanks for the input gang, ordering some parts and will update with the outcome. Trying to get this done while moving may take a week or two.

    "What Crashton said" I just changed my second idler pulley in 40k miles. also look at the tensioner damper the lower bolt will back out on it's own and that could cuase a clicking noise.
