When getting an oil change on my 06 Cooper S today I asked the tech if the mileage could be set to shorter interval. For the 1st generation cars there is a setting to use a short or normal interval. The shorter one is 7000 miles.

I had that done on my car. Now I don't have try and remember how many miles it has been.

Is it something we can do?

It was done with the Autologic computer they have the shop. Don't think it's a user setting.

Unfortunately it seems most settings on the 1st gen MINI have to be hooked up to the mothership confuser to change. I picked up a bunch of static cling oil change stickers from Advanced Auto Parts. I write a number on there & place it in the door jamb. No memory required. :)

I had no idea it was even possible. Not that I know I figured I'd share. I've never seen this discussed before.

I understand but cannot confirm that on the 2nd gen models the exact mileage desired between changes can be specified.

I just have an app for that on my iPhone. But then you probably already knew that.

Autologic can adjust The second gen cars "percentage of service life remaining" on oil or any other maintenance reminder item. 30% oil life = 5,000 miles which is just about perfect for the turbo cars.

I don't know if there is a coding option to permanently lower the oil change mileage on second gen cars, I will definitely check on the next one I service.

Let me run it by John, the Autologic costs almost as much as a Philly Mini bar tab :)

Thats a tall order to ask. I'd think you would be better off running by the shop.

Neat, but you still need to check you oil as i find a lot of people do not. Keep in mind that the oil counter is based on fuel consumption, not actual miles, so if you drive the car with a ginger foot (which i am sure Nate doesn't ;)) it will could down slower.

I have a small post it note on the drivers visor mirror for every 3k.

Its low tech but works great.

I simply do it by calendar, regardless of mileage. Winter time less miles BUT harsher conditions (short run times, colder temps) summer is more miles but better running conditions.

my 03/2012 build cms all4 started out new showing oil/filter due at 9,000 miles

as i have driven the car, it has counted down faster than actual mileage has risen, currently it will "zero out" at about 8,100 miles

i changed oil/filter myself after breakin at about 2,000 miles and again at 5,000 miles

my dad bought a used demo 09/2011 build 2012 cms all4 2 weeks after i got mine

it had 2,600 miles and the OBC showed next oil/filter due in 12,600 more miles

i changed his oil/filter the day after he bought it and again at 5,000 miles

the dealer changed my dad's the oil/filter the last week of september while the car was in for the coolant sensor "recall" at about 8,000 miles, they did it as an "annual, low mileage" change free as part of the 3 year included maintenance

the interesting thing is the OBC says the next oil/filter is due in another 8,000 miles

the SA made a big deal out of the 8,000 mile next change, said it was the "current oil/filter change interval policy"

as a result of the policy change, i will now be doing oil/filter changes at 4,000 mile intervals on both cars, alternating me and the dealer doing them

^^^ That's what I've been doing since new. While under the free oil change, I let the dealer do every other change and I'm doing the other changes. So mine is seeing changes at about the 5,000 mile point.....

Gotta help but think this missing oil is being re-purposed as "mushroom" growth on the intake valves..... Got a feeling here if the PCV system was more efficient we wouldn't be seeing this loss of oil or the fungus growth that needs chipmunk food to dislodge.....
