So hears the story. 2008 r56s just shy of 60k miles She had been consuming oil not sure of how fast. No spots on the ground. No smoke I actually could see or notice out of the exhaust. Changed the oil and installed a downpipe back exhaust. I got some smoke at idle and horrible new exhaust smell. But after a few days the bad smell diminished but the smoke was still there. Installed a catless downpipe 3 days ago. Smoke has gotten worse. It's usually big puffs at idle when the gas is blipped or I start to go. Sometimes when down shifting. It is gray with a slight blue hue. And I believe smells like burning oil. (Although I have never had a car burn oil so I am unsure) What should I be checking? Does it make since the stock exhaust was masking a problem? Pretty sure an exhaust system wouldn't cause a car to burn oil. Or could this be anything else? Thanks for the advice. I can put up a video if that's useful.
opcorn: I don't think I can help beyond the obvious. What brand of cat-back? A cheap painted one (or even a cheap 'stainless' one) could produce smoke as paint, shellac and/or 'cosmoline' burned off. Yes, removing a catalytic converter 'could' possibly unmask visible oil smoke (in theory). The job of a cat is to burn up unburned hydrocarbons (and they shouldn't be removed just because you can get away with it... they aren't there for decoration. /rant). Watch your oil consumption. Document loss (miles per quart). How many miles on the car? How long have you owned it?
Invidia q300 cat back just under 60k Riss racing downpipe heat wrapped and coated They have been on the car now for about 500 miles. And have had the issue since putting them on. But before the install I had been losing oil.
If you were losing oil before, then the issue could be a combination of the things I've mentioned. Time for a compression check, I suppose.
