Interesting article on the driving differences between some of the current F1 drivers. RACER SPECIAL: F1 turn-styles - Racer.com
In your mind..... Only Steve McQueen drove like Steve McQueen.... Or rode a bike like in "The Great Escape", yep... Only Steve McQueen had the cool to do that...
I would have to say I drive like Barry Newman aka Kowalski in the 1971 version of Vanishing Point. There is something about that movie I really connect with. Like the car also....
I would like to say that I drive like Jim Clark, 1963 & 65 F1 Champion. My wife would say I drive like a school bus driver. I say I drive like me.
Technical understanding in Formula 1 is fantastic, but its understanding of the driver is primitive.†Boy, did he say a mouthful!
That was actually a pretty interesting article. In a RWD car I'd have to say I'm like Kubica. I'm happier with a tad of understeer. In a FWD car though... I'm more like Hamilton. I like a bit of back-end slide. Now in reality I don't even compare to those two. LOL.
Same here. The scientific part of the article was interesting. I think it makes sense that your gyroscopic sensations come from the lower back. That's one of the reasons I love driving with harnesses, because it really snugs the car tight against your body there and amplifies those inputs.
It's funny. I used to be one of those "laid back" drivers but after I started autocrossing I felt so disconnected from the car. Right back to that whole sensation thing. I keep my seatback fairly straight-up and the wheel/pedal distance fairly close even for DD. I'm 6'1" and I've had guys 5'10" get in my car and push the seat back a bit to drive it.
I liked this sentence best: "Kimi Raikkonen was blessed with a combination of devastating high-speed precision and almost no emotional limitation." I definitely have "emotional limitation". To feel the car you need to be totally relaxed. This is very hard to do (for me anyway). I still have a tendency to stiffen up when I go to the brakes. The good thing is I recognize it and am working on it. I am always boggled by in-car video (sports cars where you can see the entire person) as these folks work at the limit and appear totally relaxed. Someday...
I had an advanced instructor ask me if we were going for groceries. He had me pull into the pits. We moved the seat forward and the back nearly upright.
