Does anyone know if the mileage is stored in the actual speedo cluster or in the computer. I'm looking to replace the speedo in my 2002 Cooper, but I'm concerned it will display the mileage from the previous vehicle. Also, my speedo needle sits below zero. I took it apart and moved it back to zero, but it continues to slowly drop below zero. I may leave the clear cover off so it's easy to adjust as it drops, but I'd much rather fix it. Thanks!
Why does the needlle dropping below zero matter? As long as the displayed speed is accurate....but, isn't there a peg the needle's supposed to rest on?
Because when the car is started, it doesn't auto reset to zero. So it's about 10mph off. There is no peg for to rest on. Not a bad idea for a wick fix though... I ordered a used speedo, so we'll see.
With the power on, just moving it to zero. It holds for a bit, but just dropped about 5mph down below zero. When I bought the car (this weekend) it was almost 15mph off.
You have to un plug the speed remove the needle and put it back on in the position you want, when you plug it back in it will drop and settle. You might have to trial and error a few times to get it right, but each time you must in plug.
Bought a speedo and it does not update the mileage to match my current. It displays the mileage of the previous vehicle it was in. It even shows the previous oil change interval. Thoughts? May have to see if I can fix mine by removing the needle.
Wanted to post an update. Needle continues to drop to the 6 o'clock position (it's a random position, but most commonly at 6), but it is very random. If the car sits for a few days and I start it, the needle makes a clicking sound and drops to 6. I assume it's doing its zero reset, but it does not stop at zero! I've tried to remove the needle, I've moved the needle, nothing seems to work. I've resorted to leaving off the cover so I can easily move it back when this happens. I've looked at buying a new speedo, but can't find much info on recoding the speedo to match mileage. I've had a hard time finding one with similar mileage (137k). It's a tolerable problem, but since the car is for my 16 year old, I'd rather fix it!
