Here's a Denver TV station news article (below) from their mobile web site, July 30, 2009. In some cases, you can look at a person and almost guess their nickname, without knowing their story. But sometimes, the nickname needs some explaining. In Cooper's case, it's a little of both. Cooper was born Oct. 11, 2008, weighing just over 1 pound. It didn't take long for Dr. Jeff Hanson of Presbyterian/St. Luke's Medical Center to come up with the nickname "Mini Cooper." Cooper was so tiny, a matchbox version of a Mini Cooper was placed next to him and it took up nearly half of his body. He was in a fight for survival. "There were many moments when we didn't know, because he had a very, very sick two to three months," Dr. Delphine Eichorst said. Like every family of a premature baby, Cooper's family had to live moment to moment, placing their trust in the doctors and nurses in the NICU. Nurse Heidi Dubois calls Cooper a miracle. "You can't help but love this guy, he's got determination like you've never, never seen. By all means, he shouldn't be with us and he is and he's surpassed all of our expectations," Dubois said. Cooper spent eight months in the NICU at Presbyterian/St. Luke's until he was strong enough to go home. His final day in the hospital was bittersweet, as his family struggled to say goodbye to the nurses and doctors. Cooper's mom Tanya said, "The amazing thing is not only have their taken care of Cooper, they have taken care of us." Dubois says she will miss Cooper's family as much as she will miss Cooper. But she knows they will e-mail pictures and come to visit whenever possible. Seeing the babies she cares for grow and become healthy children is the greatest reward of her job. "I can't think of anything else in the world that I would want to do," Dubois said. When Dubois said goodbye to Mini Cooper, he weighed a whopping 14 pounds. His big brother Michael said, "He's not the Mini Cooper he used to be." In fact, if Cooper has to explain his nickname for the rest of his life, that will be a very good thing. --------------------------------
