So Tina and I usually do our own thing when it comes to the drives and such, but this year we went somewhere that a bit different from the norm..

I watch a show on the History Channel with this guy Scott Wolter, a forensic geologist that travels around to all these ancient sites in N America trying to prove his theories about who or what came to America long before Columbus.....

One of his shows was about these ancient petroglyphs covering different rocks in a bunch of places, one of those is near Sylva, NC so we went and checked it out....

very cool, (you could "feel" it was old) nice drive to get there, rock is really weathered (totally exposed) so one of the photos is from the 1930s when they filled the glyphs with chalk to make them stand out.....supposed to be at least three more in the area but they have been lost to quarrying, time, neglect, etc..:confused5:

The other place for next year to see is the Wheels Through Time Museum in Maggie Valley. It is the motorcycle collection of Dale Walksler from the Velocity Channel show, Whats in the Barn. We went this year and will go back to see more.

The Cherokee say its been there longer than them, and the giant Judacullah left his 7 fingered hand print in the stone, (by jumping about a half mile and landing there) while chasing away some braves hunting in his territory...most archeologists say the glyphs are between 300 and 1500 years old and are graffiti left by native peoples while they were carving soapstone bowls out of it, (some evidence to support the bowl carving is there). No clue personally, but it is old as hell and it was something a bit different to do this time

When I was a kid, I lived in Sweden for several years. My parents encouraged (made) me study Rune Stones, which are dotted throughout Scandinavia. Basically they are viking graffiti, telling the stories of individuals that carved them into stones. I learned to translate them, which was very interesting because some Vikings were, to say the least, hyperbolous about their escapades: things like 'Rikr, the warrior, slew the great serpent on this spot' etc. (there are no great serpents in Sweden).

+1 on Wheels, been going there for years. Now with the TV show fame, it's crowded. (2'nd hijack complete, back to the Classic Rock!)

Is this thread really about the 'rock' or about neat things in general to see while in that neighborhood? I for one am getting an education for future trip planning when we eventually get to that part of the country.

I'll gladly add $.02 worth on that topic as it seems we've visit this area once a year for the last 5. Asheville, NC is typically our base, with lots of great driving day trips out of there. Quite a few craft breweries, lots of local dining, area hiking (waterfalls are abundant) and of course The Biltmore Estate. A modest country home open to the public with stunning views, and a really good winery & tasting room. (Buying tickets on line in advance is now a requirement.) In general, one of the most beautiful areas in the US.

dang you guys are reading my mind, I've compiling a list for next year and put the "Wheels thru Time Museum" on there. Just need a drive leader....hint...hint :biggrin5:

Last year we crashed a AMM meet and did the The Judacullah Stone location. I was pretty cool. I'd like to include that one too, if we can get a "sucker"....errr....I mean volunteer to lead it :biggrin5:
