Hello all, I'm new to this forum and new to the Mini Cooper world. I don't own one as of yet, but I am seriously thinking about purchasing one. I've been doing a bit of research on this site to see if there are any trends in maintenance issues and whatnot but haven't really found anything discerning to me. Is there anything that you guys would recommend I consider? And should I even be looking at a used Mini? And if I do look for one, what things should I be wary of when doing my inspection. That goes for both, first and second gen. I'm not bias as to whether it is supercharged or turbo. I just want the fun driving experience coupled with great gas mileage.

I once owned an Audi S4 and decided to trade it in for a Passat to try to save myself some money and calm my spending habits down, but it feels like this Passat is draining the life out of me and taking away my driving spirit. I need a change badly. Maybe if it were at least manual, I could bare with it, but an automatic Passat may have been too drastic of a change.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The turbo Mini's get better gas mileage than the superchargers but other than that they're both fun to drive and don't have too many problems until you get further up there in mileage.

In Mini terms, what is considered "up there" in mileage?

I have a 2002 mini Cooper s that was commuter 120 miles one way for the first 130000 miles when i bought it and now is at 180000.

It has had oil changed in s/c no issues just very low when I did it
    Power steering pump
A set of rotors and pads
    Original clutch
    Set of shocks
    Harmonic balancer
    oil changes every 5000 miles
    one set rear wheel bearings

If you drove it today not knowing the mileage you wouldn't guess it has 180000 on it. Has been a great car.

Well I've got 55,000 on mine and major problems yet. Had the intake replaced under warranty due to a manufacturer defect. I've also had the water pump replaced under recall.

I just got rid of my Audi A4 for a new 2012 cooper S. So far I love it. I've had it for 3 weeks and just about to fill up the gas tank for the first time. And for me in NYC I am able to find more parking spots :)
