Where's the actual computer on an 04 MCS? temp/range/mileage

Is it built into the tach, a separate module or part of the DME? Could I move it from my car to an 06 MCS?

The computer is tied to the VIN. The BCM and ECU are tied together and communicate with each other. I'm not gonna say it can't be done but it does require some fancy footwork and someone that knows the heck they are doing. Might want to contact Way or Jason (Mynes).

Are you trying to 'enable' the trip and mileage display on your tach? with the proper BMW/Diagnostic equipment, this feature can be "activated" within 15 minutes. This service will have to done in person though...

Both Way Motor Works and Mynes can provide this service. The dealership can do it too, but they will charge more than the $40/$50 that we charge, and probably sell you a 'module' with a part number stuck to an empty box. Hope this helps...

Yep.....what he said. Have had a few friends that did this to cars that came "w/o" the OBC when purchased.

Is there any information on reprogramming functions on the 1st gen Minis through something like INPA/EDIABAS with NCS Expert for the newer BMWs and Minis? I've searched around a bit but I'm not finding anything more than a few cryptic references to software called SSS...would this software be able to make changes like enabling the on board computer?

    OBC, check

Thanks for the advice. I got John to activate it last time I took it to Behe. If you have the right (read ungodly expensive...) computer, it's a piece of cake. The key was to find the right screen to activate the module then to configure it. We also went through a couple of other convenience things as well. Who knew?

Does cruise control work the same way? I realize I'd have to buy the steering wheel switches, but is the actual control module already installed, just not active? From the parts drawing it looks like the parts retrofit would include the steering wheel stereo controls as well. Do they work with the non-HK stereo?

Any other "empty box" retrofit kits that can be activated in software lurking out there?

Nope....the Cruise control is a full retrofit...
From what I recall, the install is pretty $$, and requires lots of work....to the point I think I remember one dealer saying they did one, and would not do another....
