More Than 15 Hours Of Live Coverage Opens With Two-Hour FOX Broadcast Network Block

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 9, 2015) â€“ A two-hour FOX broadcast network telecast kicks off more than 15 total hours of live FOX Sports television coverage of the 53rd Rolex 24 At Daytona on Jan. 24-25.

The FOX telecast begins at 2 p.m. ET on Saturday, Jan. 24, moments before the green flag waves for the first round of the 2015 TUDOR United SportsCar Championship and the Tequila PatrÃ³n North American Endurance Cup. It is the second consecutive year that the Rolex 24 telecast has opened on the broadcast channel, which is widely distributed in approximately 115 million homes in the United States.

â€œThe Rolex 24 At Daytona is the center of the motorsports universe each January, attracting attention from fans of many different racing series,â€ said David Pettit, International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) vice president, marketing. â€œFOX network television coverage enables us to reach those fans and introduce new viewers to our unique and exciting brand of motorsports. We are grateful to our partners at FOX Sports for helping us maximize this opportunity for all our stakeholders.â€

FOX Sportsâ€™ coverage will total 15.5 hours across the FOX, FOX Sports 1 and FOX Sports 2 television platforms. In addition, FOX race coverage streams live on FOX Sports GO, the app that provides live streaming video of FOX Sports content at home or on-the-go. The complete schedule is as follows:

Saturday, Jan. 24 (All times ET)

2-4 p.m. FOX Network

4-8 p.m. FOX Sports 2

8-10 p.m. FOX Sports 1

Overnight (Jan. 24-25)

10 p.m.-7 a.m. IMSA TV on IMSA.com (live video streaming and commentary)

Sunday, Jan. 25

7 a.m.-2:30 p.m. FOX Sports 1

The Rolex 24 will be the third consecutive TUDOR Championship event to feature FOX Network coverage. The inaugural season in 2014 closed with back-to-back FOX telecasts of events at Circuit of The Americas and Road Atlanta around the networkâ€™s NFL programming. Each telecast averaged more than one million viewers, with peak audiences in excess of two million which were notable high points in viewership.

IMSA.com will provide live high definition streaming coverage of the overnight hours, as well as live in-car camera footage and IMSA Radio commentary throughout the race. IMSA Radio will feature the broadcast team of John Hindhaugh from Radio Le Mans as well as Jeremy Shaw and Greg Creamer.

Saturday morningâ€™s test session at the Roar Before the Rolex 24 was cut short after a massive airborne accident for the No. 50 Highway to Help Riley-Dinan DP in the Daytona tri-oval.

Byron DeFoor was at the wheel of the Daytona Prototype when eyewitnesses said it suddenly spun backwards, caught air and went into the catch fence.

The car landed upside down on its roof on the racing surface entering Turn 1. DeFoor was taken to the infield medical center and per IMSA, was evaluated and released.

Per a Continental Tire spokesperson, it was reported that the right rear lost air pressure, which sent the car into a spin through the infield. As this was an isolated incident, there have been no other issues reported.

DeFoor co-drives this weekend with David Hinton, Jim Pace and Dorsey Schroeder, the last of whom is set to make his racing return for the first time since the 1990s.

Pruett: Defining season ahead for IMSA (racer.com)

The topic was originally raised in a conversation I had with one of the more powerful voices in the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship paddock during the offseason: "I think 2015 really is going to be a 'make or break' year for the TUDOR series," he said. "They had one shot to get it right; they didn't necessarily do that, although it did get better, and now they have one chance to prove to everyone they can make good on the promise they made last year. "

The subtext within the message's parting comment was clear. The TUDOR Championship's debut season was a mixed affair filled with memorable highs and lows, and if the second season follows the same trend, the implications could range from simple disappointment to dire outcomes.

Among the worst-case scenarios, another troublesome year could lead its small business owners and factories to look elsewhere, or to step away from the sport and wait for things to improve. At the other end of the spectrum, teams could resign themselves to the fact that they're stuck with a series that can't get its act together.

By the 2014 finale at Petit Le Mans, I'd say the TUDOR Championship hit its stride and regained a lot of the trust that was lost earlier in the season. To IMSA's credit, most of the deficiencies that emerged last year were identified and, in many instances, rectified in a timely manner. Officiating consistency was problematic and it was addressed in stages. The operations side of IMSA needed fortifying, and that was also handled with staff additions and upgrades before the season ended. TV ratings were dismal, and thanks to some help from FOX, big numbers were generated for the final two rounds by rebroadcasting shortened races immediately after Sunday NFL games.

Although reaction times varied, the new-look IMSA demonstrated its willingness to acknowledge and overcome inadequacies when they came to light. That's the big positive to take from the inaugural TUDOR Championship season.

If there's a second underlying tone to the 'make or break' comment, it's the desire for IMSA to execute the 2015 season in a proactive mindset, rather than the reactive approach witnessed throughout the majority of 2014. That's the big negative.

More time, more races, and more distance is needed from some of the ugliness that marred 2014 for a significant number of entrants â€“ and those at home â€“ to feel confident about where the series is headed.

I'll admit that I agree with the underlying tone â€“ that the TUDOR Championship struggled to live up to its own hype last year â€“ but I'm not sure I see 2015 as a 'make or break' year for the series. I've seen teams and manufacturers reject a series when an ownership change takes place or a radical rules shift happens, but it would take an epic failure on IMSA's part to send its most of its entrants running for the exit.

With more than two dozen teams to choose from in the TUDOR Championship, it wasn't hard to find team owners and principals with opinions on what they expect from IMSA this year, the key items they want to see improved, and whether 2015 is a genuine tipping point for their continued participation.

I pulled in five players to explore the theme, starting with IMSA president and COO Scott Atherton, and added an owner or manufacturer representative from each class. Mazda's John Doonan (Prototype), Corvette Racing's Doug Fehan (GTLM), Alex Job (GTD), and a series newcomer â€“ JDC/Miller Motorsports' John Church (PC) â€“ all shared their thoughts, and as usual, views from their respective places in the paddock varied.

I always knew Rojas was there because of the money (sponsorship) and not his driving. Target and Ford now.

Gaassi must have secured another big $pon$or. I'm sure Memo brought a barge load of pesos with him, Telemex is huge. I think Joey Hand will do a good job for the team. Guess this means he is no longer running DTM.
