Looking to replace my Dragon worn 16" RE01R's. I run STX, so I cannot use R comps. Any suggestions?

NT05's, Ecsta XS or Z1 Star Spec are still the best choices. Of course the new RE-11's if you want to spend some coin.

What's the limit for STX? 130 treadwear?

+2 for the Z1 Star Spec's. Dunlop is also running a rebate right now for $50 I think.

Kumho XS got good review in the latest Grassroots test.

All the tires were tested on Hollis 89 ST Civic..

This just in... Kumho is champion of the world! Taken from a post in the tire and wheels forum (which was taken from GRM magazine), the results of Andy's GRM test...

6th - Falken RT 615 Mean time: 35.302 Sec Quick time 35.125 Sec.
5th - Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec Mean time: 35.209 sec. Quick time 35.061
4th -Toyo Proxes R1R Mean time: 34.522 sec Quick Time 34.452 sec
3rd- Bridgestone RE-01R Mean time: 34.478 sec Quick Time 34.430 sec.
2nd- Bridgestone Potenza RE-11 Mean time: 34.266 Quick time 34.238 sec.
1st - Kumho ECSTA XS Mean time :34.170 Quick Time 34.030 sec.

As has been talked about, all tires were 205/50 except the re01r (195/50) and the star spec (195/55).

Very interesting. I would assume that the 225 toyo would be a little faster than the 205, but (I wouldn't think) fast enough to blow the XS out of the water. I'm also surprised to see how well the RE01R managed to hang.

I'm LOVING the 265/35/18 RE-01R's I got for $440/shipped on closeout from Tire Rack. :D

Do Nitto NT01s qualify for that class?

I have been waiting for them to do a comparison, I'll have to run out and get the issue.

I have heard good things about the sidewall strength on the new Kuhmo. The closeness of the RE-01R to the RE-11, especially with the size difference, is surprising.

Can't wait to see if/when they re-baseline and include the Hankook RS-3 and Yoko AD-08 in the mix...

But the new Kumho does look sticky... The MX was always good on the track, but wasn't the best for autocross on the MINI.

The Star Spec is great on the track, too... Just gives up a bit for autocross, IMHO.

The tyres need to be at least 180 for that class. That's what my SCCA rulebook says. My region is pretty lax when it comes to such trivial things such as this....

Hrm... Your region is more strict than the national rules for SCCA's Street Touring classes then...

"Started in 1997, this is one of the more popular categories
which include Street Touring® (ST), Street Touring® Sport (STS), Street
Touring® Xtra (STX), and Street Touring® Ultra (STU). This is the only category
that does not allow competition R-compound tires – only high performance tires
with a UTQG treadwear rating of 140 or higher."
