I guess there is less interest in this possible mod in North America since you don't get the SD diesel that Mini foolishly make with only standard Cooper brakes, not S brakes - and 225 ft-lb, so them corners arrive pretty quick. But then I never found the brakes on my justa Cooper to be that good and they were quite capable of fading if the car was driven too hard. A post elsewhere said that the Cooper and S use the same calliper and some research on part numbers on RealOEM confirmed this - on the S, the same calliper (and hose) is mounted further out to enable larger discs and different pads to be used. So I took the plunge and bought the bits to convert my new car to S brakes. With a new car, I accept it will invalidate the warranty on the brakes themselves but they are wear items anyway. I used all OEM parts so that there isn't any excuse about anything else being affected. Total cost at normal dealer prices was about $600 for parts (converted from UK prices with 20% sales tax), of which $400 is for the discs and pads and $200 for the new brackets. Fitting the parts seemed easy enough for me to do myself which was good as I couldn't see the dealer agreeing to do it (my service advisor was horrified at the suggestion!), when there is an 'official' Mini JCW brake kit, but for over $2,500 with fitting. And it really was child's play. There is no more work to it than fitting new discs and pads (when the calliper brackets have to be removed too) but I thought there might be people who would like to preview the work so I did a bit of a photo guide attached - total time was under an hour, or would have been if I hadn't spent so much time getting the greasy finger marks off the camera.... The results? Well, so far I've only had wintery roads (and winter tyres) to drive on but then a 40 mile banzai dash across country roads yesterday meant I was braking more for corners than I usually would and there wasn't a moment when the brakes weren't firm and powerful. The extra 'bite' is noticeable at all speeds - which is almost a disappointment as I find the Mini brakes over-servoed around town, but I'll put up with that to get consistent strong braking at (ahem) speed. The S brakes and calliper brackets weigh 0.9kg per wheel more than the equivalent Cooper parts, which is well within the variation in OEM wheel weights, and I haven't noticed any change in grip over bumps though having made the change with winter tyres on, it's hard to tell. You do need to have suitable wheels that will fit over the S brakes. That means any 17" Mini wheel plus some 16" wheels - I apologise for advertising another forum, but the best guide is in the Mini2 Wheel FAQ. It's surprising that 7mm on the radius of the discs and some (presumably) softer pads makes the difference that they do - they don't look much different (Cooper on top, S underneath): And full marks to this forum for allowing PDFs up to 6 Mb, so you don't have to get the low res version.
