Sooo, the stripper plate bracket snapped in half today.....:cryin: Very important part used on my 35 ton hydraulic punch press.... Unfortunatly it's a casting..... And castings tend to be brittle.... Welded it up as a temporary fix... Called the manufacturer to inquire about a replacement... Was told the following: Don't have a replacement in stock. Our last price for this piece was in 2011 at $1,600.00. We will need to work up today's price and get back to you.... Then it will need to be scheduled to be cast in the foundary.... Once cast, it will then be scheduled in our machining center and then on to assembly.... To give you an idea, this piece weighs about 5 pounds and is about 8" tall.... Today was not good for me to say the least....:mad2:
How about drilling some holes tapping them & bolting some straps on to strengthen it up a bit? Justa thought.
I would think a "Metalman" would be able to make one of those, easy peasy. Is there a reason why it has to be cast? Why not just buy a big old chunk of metal and carve out everything that doesn't look like that part?
Actually.... The only reason I can think of it being cast is it cut's down on the manufacturer's labor hours to make the part.... The casting gets it close to it's finished state with some surfaces getting machined and trued up for flatness and locating pins getting added, and a few holes get drilled and taped. There is also a "quick release" mechanism for the stripper plate that's part of the assembly.... Casting this part is a poor choice of materials from an impact standpoint..... So cost trumped reliability..... Ahhhhh, but reliability or lack of it could possibility generate after purchase sales..... And better yet.... Sales after the warranty expires.... Bruhahaha Alas.... My warranty has long since expired.... So maybe the original part met it's intended life expectancy....
OK.... Had to start a little early this morning.... Needed to deal with a frozed shop door lock.... Got the Stripper bracket disassembled... Lots of little bits and pieces....
Ordered up a couple of handsome chunks of cold finished 1018 steel 1.25" x 4" x 12" and 1/2" x 3" x 12" that came in from McMaster-Carr... My cost for raw material so far...... $60.00 Doing a little cutting and scribing..... Getting the layout started....
I knew you could just machine it out of a chunk of steel. Then you get the satisfaction of putting it to the manufacturer also. Maybe there are others out there with the same issue and you could make a little MINI money making spare parts on the side.
Makin a Custom Stripper Plate Bracket... Drillin holes.... No response back from the manufacturer.... yet....:confused5:
Makin a Custom Stripper Plate Bracket... Startin to assemble the bracket frame... [/IMG] Still no word back from the manufacturer on availability or price for the OEM piece....
They would probably just take it with no renumeration for me.... Nothing on it is patentable... Great idea.... Thanks! See ya....:eek6:
