Its a rather mundane story that's been turned into legend. Sit down kids....grab some cocoa or a beer. Way back in the early days of M/A, back even before The Great Data Debacle there was a bloke that brought up a hypothetical question about the loss of the learned knowledge gathered over multiple years on a website. This mystical site is old in internet time with 10's of thousands of members over the years proffering their knowledge. Over time this site grew and grew, finally outgrowing itself and the long slippery slope of decline started. The concern is that site will eventually implode bashing all that collective knowledge to the 1's and 0's that combined into billions of octets, each a very small piece of that grand design. Much like a majestic mountain is worn to sand. This hypothetical site is known as the "sewing site". And that kids is how we came to the M/A term of "sewing site". Now finish your cocoa, or beer and go forth, spread the story of the sewing site so it will forever remain in the legends and lexicon.
I always wonderd how it came to be known as the sewing site, and I'm still not sure... How does a site growing bigger and imploding make it the 'sewing site'? Why not the 'insecticide site' or the 'beer and wine site'? It's almost like there is a sentance in the first post that I can't see that makes the connection.
Ahh... It seems the bloke that was postulating these theories way back then in order to not look directly at the sun made this mystical site about the subject of "sewing". For you see, Motoring Alliance are if nothing, friendly and polite, for the most part. So..even when they "bash" others, it is done is a polite and friendly manner.
When M/A was first started, any mention of it's name on the other site would get you banned or the post deleted, a warning or all of the above. Someone started referring to it as the "Sewing Site" as a joke and it stuck. At least that is how I remember it. Jim
At the time it became known as the sewing site, it could have just as easily been called the quilting site, lawn cutters are us, whittlers on the porch, pulling weeds,,, take your pick. Some folks from the original MINI site, on a new improved MINI site, clicked with the name of the old site, and have moved on, and for the most part forgotten those times:wink: Mark
Yep, no need to use real names, esp. when postulating doom. It went something like... "Let's say there's this hypothetical site. Maybe it's all about sewing and full of members who are really into sewing and they chat all the time on the site about different sewing machines and sewing patterns and sewing bees and all things related to sewing. And let's say it's been going for a while and is ginormous and packed full of tons of tips and historical information. Now let's say for some unknown reason that site might fail one day and shut down, taking all that wealth of helpful info with it to bit heaven. What would be a way to preserve the info, maybe before the implosion?" We all knew what "sewing site" he was talking about and the name stuck.
I confess, I was there, or here, or wherever the interweb is, involved, at the time, and I hope to never go through that kind of bull **** again... Mark
Umm... not so secret. And it takes a REAL man to sew a mod for his MINI (or at least for the trailer he pulls with the MINI)!
I got my MINI and joined both forums just about the time this was happening. Never knew what the drama was all about, or what the sewing site reference was. I post at both but this M/A is more comfy, like being home where it's safe. Well, except for that Jack Nicholson impersonator lurking around... All the bannings...that was weird. The blocked links are strange too.
