Ok, so since it's been nice out, I've been motoring with the sunroof open and the windows down. I noticed today that while I'm shifting, I get these loud, pinging/popping noises from the back/exhaust. Is this normal? :confused5:
When it is warm, I get a popping, pinging sound from back there and it is the gas cap. Don't know it it is venting or what. Jim
Yes, this is normal. It's the wonderful pop and burble that the 1st Gen MINI is known for. Either that or when you shift you lift a cheek and last nights beans...
It's more "pingy" at first, then starts to become a "popping" noise. If it's normal, that's fine... still learning the wonderful noises of my R53. The R56 was very quiet compared to Ryu :biggrin5: No beans!
Might be the coil springs popping and pinging.. If you are sure it is not the exhaust. As someone has already mentioned..
Pretty sure it is the exhaust. Someone mentioned the "ting" it starts out as is because the cat's not warmed up yet?
Mine definately gets to more of a hard 'pop' when the engine and exhaust are very hot. It's much softer than when the engine and exhaust system is cold.
Why is my boot so noisy? Ha Ha Ha..... This kills me every time I read it.... Sorry, it's just me.... You made my day today...
Second forum Kitty that the general consensus is: "It's the beans!" Your reputation precedes you...lol
Ain't beans.... Sorry for starting that rumor. One thing I noticed is you are not winding out the engine enough. I'm wondering if you have some small stones laying on top of the mufflers or the silver plate under the battery box. Lay under the back of your car & with the exhaust cool smack the exhaust & see if you can duplicate that pinging sound. Other than that I have nothing.
Well here's the thing...... when I do rev it out, you don't really hear the noise. I was kinda shifting lower for the sake of duplicating the noise. I'm going in for a pre-dragon oil change in a few weeks... I'll have my guy check out under the car thoroughly.
Listening I couldn't hear a "ping" noise. There was a loud "thunk" which I think was a gear change. Is there is specific point in the recording to listen to to hear the sound you are referencing? (Yes, it's slow at the office today. )
Okay that is what I thought was a gear shift. If it isn't and it's coming from the back I'm gonna lean toward loose suspension parts unless you have tire/spare/tools in the back that might be loose. If they hit any part of the frame they will make an noticeable noise.
