Yup, took the plunge and installed "7" today. WOW, what an improvement over Vista! Much faster, especially on the internet, easier to use, better graphics and stuff hasn't disappeared/reappeared all by itself (yet). Took about 4hrs to install, tho I've read moving from XP is a major hassle. Only know enough about computers to be dangerous and would appreciate comments from anyone else who's tried it at this early date. Thanks - Dwight
I want to, but I'm an XP user and I'd rather not do a fresh install at this time. The thought of reinstalling every app makes me want to run and hide.
Well, I am a computer guy, so I just ordered myself a Mac Book Pro. I will be running W7 in VM, but first I got to get my hands on it. Come on, Shanghai, ship it already. But so far the reviews I've read have been positive. Supposed to run even faster then XP. We'll see. But it seems the verdict is that Vista should have been called ME 2. Only had a handful of interactions with that pig, all bad. Pretty much every client I had that was running Vista was told that they will have to switch to XP, or I would not take the job.
The best thing so far about 7 is the new Apple add.... Apple - Get a Mac - Watch the TV Ads Broken Promisis is a hoot! Matt
I stuck with XP on my confusers...would rather run Bob than Vista. Hmmm, I suppose no one else remembers Bob, eh? Never mind. I'll stick with XP at least until I hear more feedback stories about upgrading from XP to W7.
As an IT person I must ask for equipment specs. 5+ hrs is a lot. I assume that includes installing apps and restoring user data?
My buddy works for Symantec, so he's had a developer license of Win7 for almost six months now. He's been a huge XP advocate and thinks Vista is rubbish. He's telling me that 7 is so good that he's probably going to dump his XP machines and go to 7, then run 16-bit apps in VM's. dp
I am mostly XP now, except for some Unix boxes. The Mac is my first outside of work. Sadly all my HW is older and single core. Not ideal for VM stuff.
I remember Bob. What a joke. I also remember working with Windows 1,2 and then finally 3. Opps, Im dating myself :blush2: I just won and XBOX 360 Pro at a Microsoft event on Wednesday (that's the 2nd 360 I've won, but that's a different story). It came with a Bestbuy gift receipt so it's going back today and Im getting a shiny new Toshiba netbook with Windows 7 Starter for my wife, but I'm hoping to use it too For Christmas I'm going to replace our 8 year old mini-tower with a new Win7 box. I've heard nothing but good things about 7. Microsoft stocks are up 10% today and if 7 is as good as everybody's claiming, they're going to have a good next few months, financially
ive been using vista for a while, and though i do like XP, i think the windows vista has a better appealing layout than the casual XP. what does the windows 7 look like? anything majorly different?
There are reasons for that Microsoft deferred a lot of earnings because of accounting rules regarding the free upgrade to 7. So the recovery of computer sales (slow but real) and the bump in money from finally cashing in the checks, so to speak, made Microsoft look a bit better than it may really be. We'll see. The beta community seems somewhat happy with 7, and we're going to start seeing if the public likes it. The fact that install takes so long onto existing machines makes me think I won't be upgrading my win-boxes (all on XP Pro, never took the Vista plung). If I get a new computer I guess I'll have to get used to it. One thing I do hate is how Microsoft so callously changes things that have the exact same function in one release vs the other. The total number of people years of experience that gets flushed down the toilet in the name of whatever is staggering! Matt
I only went with Vista when I built my new Intel core i7 machine because I got Vista Ultimate through the university for about $18. This was back in spring. I'd like to try Windows 7 but I'm broke and out of work.
I think I'm going to buy an upgrade version and create a dual boot box to test 7 out. Then I can do a slow and methodical migration over if I decide it want to keep it. XP support will still be out there for quite some time so there is no hurry to migrate. Besides, the tools I use most are not up to 7 specs yet.
This is what I've been wondering about. MS usually only offers full support for current and one previous generation of their OS, so XP support should whither pretty quickly if they follow their normal MO. On the other hand, I figure they have to adjust a bit this time due to the backlash against Vista. If I remember correctly, they even offered an option for folks who bought machines with Vista to "downgrade" to XP at one point. I'll hold out as long as they still support XP and I'm not otherwise hampered by it...works well for me and I don't need to waste the $$.
Yes -- everything -- lots of drivers, all my apps, and all my data. Could have done it faster if I stayed with the machine every minute.
I don't think that is available in the consumer market any more. At my job though we have an enterprise license and still purchase our computers "downgraded" to XP Pro. I suppose I'll have to start researching the need for an upgrade path for our computers (and hold out hope that I can convince everyone to make the switch to a Linux based desktop). My personal laptop dual boots Vista and Mepis. Never loaded SP3 for Vista due to reported problems with it borking the dual boot. Doubt I would pay to upgrade the Vista to 7. I'd rather use the money on a new netbook.
Downgrade to XP is still available from most HW makers. I know my local Frys still sells XP Pro for OEM builders. The reason Vista tanked and XP support has been extended is because enterprise level clients never adopted Vista. The support needed and the HW upgrade costs associated were just too prohibitive.
