I think you are referring to the Renault Dauphine [the spelling may be wrong, but I remember it had an "e" at the end of the second word]

Nah.....Renault made them back in the late '50s thru mid '60s. My Dad had one. Rear engine, water cooled. Spare tire was located under the front bumper. ...Les Oh....wait.....that was the Dauphine. My bad.
