I would never use tape as a replacement for seat belts. :D I'm fond of using gaffer's tape to kill unwanted lights. Leaves no residue when removed.
I agree with you. The thermostat housing is plastic on my 06, on my third one. It appears MINI did not improve the design on the newer cars.
