I have had luck with some cars PUSHING IT DOWN HARD (like trying to latch it if it was not closed all the way)...then clicking the unlock and pulling up HARD...
Stuff like this happens with any car!! Hang in there!!
Not sure on a gen2...
But the on a gen1 it is under the rear seat cushions... Just list it up..it is snapped down pretty lightly..kinda like a couch..and look for a cable, and yank...it allows you to open the trunk if the electric release fails...
Since you heard "something"and it did not open, I was thinking it is frozen...
If it is below 32° f it might be...
Often folks wipe the door seals to prevent them from freezing...but miss the big trunk seal...a bit of age..some dirt...water...cold...and it might stick.
Maybe when it warms up...it will open up OK!! (Have a garage with a tiny bit of heat? Or maybe it will warm up tomorrow?)
When it does, take a rag, wipe off the rubber seal and the underside of the hatch where it meets the rubber seal..then use some slick cleaner/rubber protectant...amourall will work, some like "boe-shield" 303 protectant, or even a trace of vasoline....
If you have a friend around with car stuff...a couple drops oil oil or a small smear of grease on the latch at the bottom and the hinges at the top, and you will be fine for a few years!!
I might suggest you should do the same on the side doors!! Better to prevent an issue before it happens!!
Actually that's a great suggestion! By chance, do you know where the trunk release cord is located? I can't find it anywhere.. Owner's manual wasn't much help, either.
