Watch "Opposed Piston Opposed Cylinder Engine" Video at Engineering TV Will this ever make it to the street?
Very interesting concept indeed. Since he said they were developing it for the military I would say it might make the street. Of course, the government is cutting money to the military right now, but the last time they did that the civilian community got all kinds of cool stuff like the internet. Jim
Now that is some engineering. Love stuff like this as it not only showcases a particular idea, but it can really start the innovation process too.
2 stroke... ring ding ding ding..... I for it.I can already see it now...special rotary reed valves. Jolleymotos for the exhaust, a custom manifold for a Spintex SC and a custom NOS system! Yup 1000whp easy?
Did you know that that engine was first developed in 1907? They have been used in large industrial applications since then, mostly ships and locmotives.... however there were car engines of this design built in the early 1920's, in a car called the Gobron-Brillié..... Yes, the idea here is to eliminate the second crankshaft. Honestly, the long rods to the outer two pistons are VERY long and heavy. There are other issues. I know far more about that engine than I am allowed to say, actually. <zips lip>
