Patrick Depailler was one of the best in my book though the standing don't
show it. He went way, way too early.

We all know teams have good years and bad, but I don't think it's ever been this bad for a wold champion team and driver before. I hope they can at least be competitive this year.

The first time I was at Indy for the F1 race I was amazed at how small the cars were.

But then a few years later we saw a MINI on the roof of an Excursion.

The most distance covered wins. Crazy, but that would decide it if they all DNF. Could be the safety car wins the race.

Really, F1 is only about the sound for you?

    I mean, I know that's a component, but.....

How about the fact that they get sideways out of turns now, or leave long black streaks coming out of corners? How about the fact that they're already turning times just a tick off of last year's times?

Some of the engines sound like Ducati motorcycle engines to me, but that sound sure doesn't make Moto GP any less exciting, does it?

    The Ferrari sounded wicked too......

Don't get me wrong I love all aspects of F1. But the sound of the screaming 12s, 10s, and 8s will be missed.

I little repost of my own from FB:

"Now, I know technically the MOTOR in Electric Motor qualifies it for the Motor Sports, but after hearing the current iteration of F1 cars whistle and whine through turns and brake zones like Anakin Skywalker's pod racer, I am half way expecting Obi-Wan Kenobi to magically appear from the stands and tell me this is NOT the F1 I am looking for."

Mercedes and Red Bull...except the guys who many would have blindly assumed would be behind the wheel of these podium cars were DNFs. Most interesting indeed.

Absolutely, and I do understand Z06's points.....

However, I disagree with the premise that the racing was better in times past - they still raced to a set of rules just like now, just different ones. And the racing may have been wilder and less strategized, but I think that's because the cars, engines, gearboxes tires etc were more fragile, if anything the systems in the cars of the last few years were almost too good, that's why we had processions, and in years past we didn't cause cars broke then - frequently.

Cars also had flat tires, ran out of gas on the last lap and so on.....

With today's computer systems and telemetry, it's almost impossible to have those heroics that used to make racing so unpredictable......now the pits know when the engine's going to fail well before the driver does.

Changing the rules like this year adds in both the elements of failure, and the unpredictableness of before - at least till the teams get on top of things - and it also adds in a lot more variables to deal with. To some that seems artificial compared to the days when the race went to the guy who could keep his foot down harder and longer than the next - and not break the machine. But today's drivers cope with things so far and above what they did 20 years ago, not only are the cars so much more complex, the braking, cornering acceleration are so extreme compared to even the early 90's - well before the last turbo era anyway - these guys are amazing in what all they can do - the way they can multi task under these loads and still keep the car in the race!

So yes, things are different, but I don't see it as a bad thing, I think these are exciting times and I look forward to the rest of the season!
